Measuring Outdoor Stairs: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Measure the Distance from the First Step to the Landing:

  • Start from the first step of your outdoor stairs (or ground level) and use a measuring tape or ruler to determine the distance to the top of the stairs or the landing.
  • Ensure your measurements are as accurate as possible, especially considering the slope and curve of the stairs.

2. Round Up the Measurement:

  • Round the measured distance to the nearest whole number. For example, if the measured distance is 23.8 Inch, round it up to 24 Inch.

3. Verify End-to-End Space:

  • Verify that the measured distance covers the entire span of the stairs. From the starting point to the end point of the stairs, ensure the length of the handrail is sufficient to cover the entire distance.
  • Ensure the length of the handrail matches the actual distance of the stairs, without neglecting any potential obstacles or gaps.

4. Record the Measurements:

  • Record the measured distance, including the rounded-up size. This will be the accurate size you'll need when purchasing an outdoor stair handrail.

Important Note: Consult Professionals

  • If you have any doubts about the measurements or selecting the appropriate handrail, don't hesitate to consult professionals such as architects, handrail manufacturers, or renovation advisors. They can provide expert advice and help you make the best decision.

Have chain link fence on top of the back wall (about 3ft high) with a gate at one point of the wall. At the gate, there are concrete steps from the yard over the wall a ramp on the other side. This railing provides safety going up the steps. It's holding up well so far rain or shine. It does get a bit heated from the sun but I wear my garden or leather work gloves , so that's no problem. Would recommend!

Instructions could be clearer to get the slope correct.

Assembly was not difficult but it was tedious. Lots of pieces to fit together. It's best if you have a large carpeted area to lay the parts on while you fit them together.I had to replace all of the small sheet metal screws with one size larger as the provided screws wanted to strip out the holes. The local hardware store didn't have black so they're silver, but they don't stand out too much. The provided machine screws were fine.My steps are pre-cast concrete so I used the included concrete anchors. They are hollow steps, so a couple of the anchor bolts pulled up higher than they otherwise would so I had to carefully cut them off to fit the cover into place. Once done, the rail is very strong. It doesn't flex at all.The picture shows the included hook being installed on the bottom. I did it that way but should have put it on the top so a hanging umbrella would be under the eave. It's not easy to change this, so that's how it's staying. Be aware of this when you're assembling it.

The railings are well packaged and well made, however, the holes in the two rails that the spindles go in are not lined up. They are 1/4" off between the two rails as seen in the photos. The difference is not that noticeable when assembled out of the box, BUT, I had to shorten each rail by 2.5" on each end to fit my stairs due to the angle. The distance from the post to the first rail is 2.5" shorter and the difference in the angle between the two is noticeable. The post and spindle should be parallel and they are not.

My husband and I wanted to install a handrail for our patio steps. In pursuit of one with a modern and high-quality appearance, I searched high and low with no luck. After considering all the similar options, I reluctantly chose this particular product. After installation, the appearance exceeded my expectations, and I must admit that it is impressively solid and sturdy. The handrail has a smooth feel to it. The only issue I have is with the logo on the bottom of the leg. I'm going to cover it with some black spray paint. I do not understand the reasoning behind the decision to engrave this, as it seems rather tacky. We installed it in brick, which presented a bit of a challenge but ultimately proved successful.

We needed to replace our wooden railing that was getting pretty wobbly. When we looked at the cost of this and its quick delivery, why on earth would we go to the trouble -and expense - of building railings again? We ordered one and were so pleased that we immediately ordered a second. The railings are solid, relatively easy to install, and look really nice.

For 2 step handrail. Well made product with a powder coated textured handrail. All hardware was supplied as needed. I installed it on wood, I’m sure it’s harder with a concrete install. For concrete you need to buy a concrete drill bit. What I didn’t expect was it came with spare screws. Awesome!!!Screws I believe are powder coated stainless steel. It’s a guess but a magnetic screw tip doesn’t hold them and they are definitely not aluminum.Don’t do what I did. I was ready to screw it in place and I forgot to put on the decorative base that covers the lower hardware. I had to completely disassemble the rail to slide them on.Longer handrails may need 2 people, 1 person to just hold it steady during assembly.
