For another $120, you could buy the Lie-Nielsen # 4 1/2, getting you a (much) higher quality product that is made in America by Americans. $120? That's one less trip to McDonald's per month, for a year. Lie-Nielsen makes some of the best planes in woodworking, which are flat and straight OUT OF THE BOX and ready to go. WoodRiver? Needs more work out of the box . Your choice. You wanna play with a plane to make it work right, or do you wanna use it for it's intended purpose out of the box?

Very nice looking plane.....but.....I read where it's hit or miss whether you get a mostly flat back of the plane iron or not. Mine was a miss as I spent at least 3 hours trying to get the back decent enough just so I could do the famous "ruler trick". The blade was flattening as if were convex instead of concave.Once it was acceptable, the edge was honed to 8000 grit. Shavings were see through and full width once I dialed it in, but it seemed like I was adjusting every 2 passes or so. Also the rear tote was uncomfortable and cramped it seemed, even though I have smaller hands.I will stick to the e-bay Vintage Stanleys for my next handplane.

This is a great plane, the sole is flat, the iron is flat, the sides are square to the base. After cleaning all the packing oil off, sharpening the iron, and a little wax, I am able to take whisper thin shavings with great ease. I am hooked on WoodRiver planes, and plan to buy more in the future.

The item showed up with a damaged handle. This is a $200 high end plane that is meant to be durable and last a life time if properly maintained, but before I even got to use it there was visible damage. Because of this I will have to make a modification to the handle so it can be used without discomfort.

Excellent plane, it is my new favorite. Makes perfect shavings and leaves a shinny smooth surface

Incredible tool, especially considering how in expensive it is. Upon reciept I cleaned the oil off of it and removed the blade for additional honing. Which I spent about a half hour doing. I could have just spent 10 minutes on it and that would have been more than suficiant. What I did was a little over the top, but I wasn't in a rush. Then I set it up to work a billet of cherry that I had laying around. The shavings were see through and consistant. I had a glass finish on the wood in just a few minutes of very easy planing. I went ahead and also purchased the #5 low angle jack and the normal #5 and #6 to upgrade my mosy frequently used Stanleys. I own and use a LN plane as well...and I just can not even pretend to justify their expense when these planes by Woodriver are available. I am getting the exact same results at half the cost. They are super comfortable and easy to use. I highly recommend them.

I wanted a #41/2 for a while because of the wide blade, this plane seemed to fill the bill for price and quality. I have purchased other planes before and spent numerous hours trueing and honing them. This plane was good to go out of the box with just a little honing of the blade. I spent no time trueing the bottom as that was dead flat. I am very pleased with the quality of the adjustments and the precision of the cap iron.
