This thing is small and flexible, it lets me put my radio in way more convenient spots, and I’m not worried about it breaking. Range seems comparable with the stock one I had before. When I first bought, I accidentally got female adaptor, which was a bummer, so watch out for that.

For a shorty "stubby" antenna, this antenna worked very well. It even out-performed some "extended range" antennas. But then, at only a few months old and with relatively little use, the antenna internally failed. There was no visible mechanical damage. At first, I actually thought that the radio was "bricked"--it had no reception. As soon as I switched to another antenna, the radio went back to its usual very good performance. Others have reported that this antenna apparently is prone to internal failure. Well, that's what happened to me. My recommendation is NOT to use this antenna on a mission-critical radio--it may quit working and you may not even know it.

This didn't seem to make much difference in the radio. Didn't transmit any better than the original. But it's a nicely made antenna. Your mileage may vary though.

Ok, I’ll be honest. I bought this little antenna for a very specific reason. I run a D-Star radio in one room and a hotspot (OpenSpot 4 Pro) in another room. I mostly listen on this radio. During the summer months we get a lot of thunderstorms and I don’t leave my tower mounted antenna connected during these periods of bad weather. By using this little antenna, I’m able to leave the radio on during storms and the antenna communicates well on very low power to my hotspot. As of this moment, I have not run it through my antenna analyzer to check the SWR. When I do, I’ll update this review. Meanwhile, I’m using the antenna in receive only mode.I tested this antenna at 433.000 mhz and found the SWR to be 3.7/1. I no longer use it and I’m now using a dummy load.

Overall a great purchase I instantly noticed an increase in pick-up with local radio stations I couldn't receive before. Also noticed improved reception on the NOAA channel. Very pleased and fast shipping!

Both my son and I are getting into Ham Radios for hiking/skiing/backcounty skiing/emergencies. The Baofeng UV-5R is a fantastic, functional and powerful radio in an incredibly small package. It runs on the FRA/GMRS frequencies, not requiring as much formality when you use them. Plus, you have the option of going on to the standard ham frequencies when you need to use a repeater, etc. for longer distances.Saying that, the standard 8-10" 'rubber ducky' antenna on the UV-5R is OK, but just not use-able in a jacket pocket without having the antenna hang out the top. Requiring the pocket to be un-zipped somewhat you risk losing the radio, too, and risk of filling your pocket with snow with a radio that is not water-proof. So, he and I were looking for an alternative that was flexible and short enough to fit into a jacket pocket or backpack. This short whip fits the UV-5R perfectly! Its not as short as some, but short enough to fit in a jacket pocket. Its also very flexible, so at first glance I'm confident that it will be able to manage to a lot of physical movement brought on by aggressive skiing/hiking. It seems well-built, too. Again, not as small as some of the antennas on Amazon, but I feel better that this antenna will manage better to more physicality of its use.In full disclosure, I have not tested this shorter antenna for reception and transmit strength in its intended environment of the wilderness. It seems to work fine in our big metropolitan city here, getting to repeaters and talking to others with great clarity. How it works in/around terrain/vegetation is yet to be seen. But, for its purpose of better simplex communications between two parties skiing, or line-of-site to a repeater tower, I'm super confident it will be more than adequate considering we will not be more than a mile or so apart. If I were to go deep into the backcountry, I'd probably pack a 15-18" whip antenna as a backup for improved odds of communicating in case of an emergency.-B
