Inspecting and Testing Faulty Ice Makers

Inspecting Faulty Ice Makers

Inspecting Faulty Ice Makers

Signs of a faulty Refrigerator Ice Maker can include:

  • No Ice Production | Small/Misshapen Ice Cubes | Frequent Ice Jamming | Leaks or Water Dispensing Issues | Noisy Operation | Ice Smells/Tastes Strange | Error Codes/Indicator Lights | Inconsistent Ice Production | Freezing Water in the Ice Maker
Testing Faulty Ice Makers

Testing Faulty Ice Makers

You can test your Refrigerator Ice Maker by:

  • Visual Inspection and Power Check | Water Supply Check | Ice Maker Functions | Thermostat and Heater | Ice Maker Module and Controls | Mechanical Components | Consult the Manual

Testing your Ice Maker explained:

1. Visual Inspection and Power Check - Visual Inspection: Start by visually inspecting the ice maker for any obvious signs of damage, leaks, or loose connections. | Power Check: Ensure the ice maker is properly plugged in and receiving power. Check the power cord and outlet for any issues. Use a multimeter to verify voltage at the ice maker’s electrical connections.

2. Water Supply Check - Water Supply: Confirm that the water supply line is connected and turned on. Disconnect the water line temporarily to check for water flow. | Water Inlet Valve: Test the water inlet valve using a multimeter to check for continuity. If the valve doesn’t have continuity, it may be defective and needs replacement.

3. Ice Maker Functions - Manual Test: Depending on the ice maker model, you may be able to manually initiate an ice-making cycle. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for specific instructions on how to do this. | Observe Operation: During the cycle, observe the ice maker to see if it fills with water, freezes ice cubes, and ejects them into the ice bin. Note any unusual sounds or movements that could indicate a problem.

4. Thermostat and Heater - Thermostat: Test the mold thermostat for continuity using a multimeter. Compare the readings with the manufacturer’s specifications. If the thermostat is faulty, it may not signal the ice maker to start producing ice. | Heater: Check the heater element for continuity and proper operation. The heater ensures that ice cubes release from the mold when ready. Replace it if it’s defective or damaged.

5. Ice Maker Module and Controls - Module Testing: The ice maker module controls the ice-making cycle’s timing and operations. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to test its functions, such as advancing the cycle manually. | Control Board: Some ice makers have a control board that manages various functions. Test it for proper voltage and functionality using a multimeter.

6. Mechanical Components - Gears and Motors: Inspect gears, motors, and switches for any visible signs of wear or damage. Ensure that all moving parts are functioning correctly without obstruction. | Manual Activation: Manually activate mechanical components to ensure they operate smoothly and perform their intended functions.

7. Consult the Manual and Manufacturer Support - Manual: Always refer to the ice maker’s manual for specific testing procedures and troubleshooting tips. | Manufacturer Support: Contact the manufacturer’s customer support or visit their website for additional assistance, especially if you encounter specific error codes or technical issues.

The old one was still making ice but was dripping water and forming icicles hanging down - I don't know what was wrong with it ,but just buying the new one was cheaper than calling a repair tech. Installation was one screw and a plug. Works fine - I'm happy.

The ice maker arrived quickly. The water funnel was broken in shipment, but I was able to use the old one. Installation was straight forward and everything worked great. I'm very satisfied.

My Frigidaire Gold from 2010 was not on the model list but I took a chance since comparing the photos showed it to be the same as my broken ice maker. It installed fine and works perfectly. From my research these things are all pretty much the same assuming you get one with a wire harness that matches the one on your fridge. It also didn't begin a cycle right away even though some sites online said it should. I found a document from GE that said the tray must cool to lower than 10 degrees before the cycle would begin, and sure enough there was water in the tray when I checked an hour later. So give it some time if it seems like nothing is happening.

Great replacement ice maker for my very old but kept in pristine condition Sears/Kenmore refrigerator model 9547651. Like the instructions stated, I may & did need to cut a hole in the plastic side panel to match the water filler tube...easy peazy. Other than that, this appears to be the same ice maker. On another website, not only was the OEM out-of-stock (on back order) but it was advertised for almost twice the price! So glad I happened to find this product. I took a chance and hoped that the control board didn't need replacing, as well. Apparently, it's a match because the ice maker has been working perfectly for days now.

This did the trick. You really need to look very carefully to see any difference whatsoever. I had a lot of trouble getting the old one out but that's just my learning curve. So when this showed up I had no issues whatsoever changing it out. The only thing at all is that the connector on the new cable did not have the little ears that hold it to the plastic so that it stays in place while you are putting the other side on. I just held both sides and no problem. But it does make it harder to put in because I had to hold the connector in while I was sliding it in place. This has no impact on how it works or anything like that. The only other thing I noticed was the arm that rotates to push out the ice is made of plastic and it looks like the original one is metal coated with Teflon. But I think it might be equal in performance. It would take a few years to know for sure. But for the price I don't think it matters. My old one had some issues with the actual ice tray that made me want to replace it even if it did work. My old one had a dead motor by the way so none of the plastic parts or anything like that had any bearing on it.

This is an inferior product. It was a perfect fit with the electrical connector matching its mate in my fridge freezer and the mounting holes lining up exactly as well. Once installed, it started making ice within 30 minutes. The ice cubes were a little large, so I tried adjusting them to be smaller (shortened the water valve fill time) but that didn't work. I had ice sheets at the bottom of the bin, indicating the ice maker was over filling a little. Then after 8 weeks and 6 days, the ice maker quit completely. Amazon support told me to contact the vendor since the failure occurred after the normal return window. When I did that, Supplying Demand told me I ordered the wrong product and I'd have to order another one from them. That friends, is baloney. I bought an OEM ice maker locally and installed it. Using the OEM part number, I searched Amazon for it's equivalent. The same Supplying Demand ice maker came up as third on the list of suitable ice makers. Their 60-day return for refund or 1-Year replacement warranty will not be honored. The problem I had is common among others who bought this product. Don't do it.

Unit installed fine using some of the old parts. My issue with the unit is that it routinely does not clear the ice from the unit and the cubes get wedged into various positions atop the unit. Sometimes the unit completely jams up and when the water begins to fill it creates a huge mess, splashing water all over the inside of the freezer and even into the ice bucket which creates an iceberg at the bottom of the bucket which prevents the dispenser from working. When this happens, you have to completely remove the bucket to clean it (which is often frozen into place). It sucks when this happens because you have to pour warm water into the bucket to melt the iceberg, and the water spills down the door of the inside and outside of the freezer and all over the floor. It's a mess.EDIT: I ended up buying an OEM replacement. It was a complete unit that required none of the old parts. It installed more easily and started cranking out ice cubes much faster than the generic. It has had zero problems. It is a FAR better solution and well worth the additional forty bucks for the OEM part.

Most of these refrigerators use generic cross matched parts, the ice maker is no different.I initially replaced the water valve since it was cheaper and easier, but it did not correct my issues of no ice. Ordered the ice maker, and after swapping a couple pieces it slipped right into my whirlpool with in-door ice dispenser.Started making ice within a couple hours, and the bin was full in 24 hours.I did flush the lines after the valve replacement, and tossed the 1st couple dispensed trays to ensure there was no debris in the system, but all good now.Make sure to clean it well, as mine had some garbage in the trays leftover from manufacture. I don't really want to drink contaminated ice.Since mine was an in-door ice tray, it was not exactly a 5 minute job, but anyone with some handyman ability will figure it out.
