I have installed several wood floors with Powernail brand nailers (oak, bamboo, hickory). I purchased the 45R for a new install. After 3 boards the ratchet mechanism failed. Without the ratchet function you have to hit the plunger quite hard to properly seat a nail. A good workout - it will wear you out- a bad product. A replacement ratchet mechanism is $41.00.

I don't even know where to begin when talking about this piece of crap nailer. First off, unless you are putting flooring in a closet, get a pneumatic nailer. I put in 600 square feet and had tennis elbow within two days from hammering away at this thing. I had to hire somebody just to whack it, and I was apprehensive about that because I thought I might get sued if the person developed the same elbow problem. As far as driving nails, I'd say at least 50% wouldn't go in. The manufacturer claims you don't have to hit it hard and that the rachet won't come back up until the nail is in. BS. I'd hit it just about every way possible, and as mentioned, at least 50% of the time the ratchet came back up immediately. Hit it again and all that happens is it drives another nail right on top of the first one that didn't go it. I eventually figured this out, so when it popped back up when I certainly didn't hit it hard enough to finish the job, I knew not to hit it again. I'd have to get a pair of plyers and break off the half-driven nails. Even when the ratchet did work, often the nails weren't deep enough and I had to use a hammer and punch to drive them down farther. I'm telling you, I tried everything, and every time I thought had it figured out, the same crap would happen. I'd unsuccessfully drive nails with right-hand blows, switch to the left (uncoordinated) hand and the thing would work five times in a row. Bingo! Use my left hand. Just as I'd think that, six nails in a row would go half way and have to be broken off. I had spots with so many broken-off nails that I couldn't even try to drive another one, for chances are it would end up on top of a broken nail.I estimate that for every one day the job should have taken that I spent 4 days. Six hundred square feet took me 3 weeks! To nail in a board often took at least 5 minutes, and that would be to set 5 nails at most. Set the five nails, break off 2 or 3 that went in halfway, and then drive in 3 out of 5 that were in deep enough that they couldn't be broken off but weren't in all the way.The reason I bought this was because it was one floor in small townhome and I don't plan to ever put in hardwood floors again. Big, big mistake. I gave it a 1 star rating only because I don't have the option to give ZERO.
