The Hydrant head and handle are constructed of heavy-duty cast iron. You can easily replace the rod, plunger, seat and linkage without digging. This frost proof yard hydrant has a shut-off valve which operates below the frost line to supply running water, even in the coldest weather. My wife was tired of dragging 150' of hose all over the yard so I started installing yard hydrants at key locations. These are great. I don't have to worry too much about deep freezing, so I went with the 2' depth model. I used the five gallon bucket filled with gravel method of installation, so I shouldn't have any issued with the stand pipe draining as designed. These will definitely hold up better than the original plastic hose bib stand pipe I sheared off the first year here.
