Helpful Hacks

  • Did you know that you can control moisture by adjusting the length of cotton wick that goes into the soil? More wick means more moisture, so you can make the straws work for little sprouts or majestic ferns, growth periods or rest periods.
  • The straws help keep the soil evenly moist. Use them for plants that thrive under such conditions, like those from rainforest and swamp environments.
  • Refill and shift the water in the vase regularly. We recommend changing the water and thoroughly watering your plants with fertilizer once a month.
  • Wash, trim, or replace the wick as it wears out over time. Use a nylon thread to guide the new wick through the tube. Shift the wick whenever you notice a change in how your plants are doing, or when you’re repotting.
  • The straws are asymmetric to allow for a variety of setups, and you can use either end in your plant
  • Setup is flexible – Unlike siphon-based watering systems, Plantstraws use capillary action, meaning the water source does not need to be higher than the plant, reducing the risk of leakage.
  • Regular care is key – While self-watering, most plants still benefit from occasional top watering—think of it as a heavy rain in a moist forest. Gradually space out watering until you find the right balance for your plant. For most small to medium plants, we recommend monthly top watering with fertilizer.
  • Let your plant guide you – Water levels in the vase may change slowly, depending on your plant’s natural rhythm. Check in with your plant to ensure it looks happy and hydrated—sometimes less water is needed than you’d expect.

I’ve tried everything to make these straws work and the only way I was able to get the siphoning effect intended was to take out the rope. There simply isn’t enough head pressure to get the water through the rope to the outlet. Note that I’m a chemical engineer and I’ve tried different container height differentials, priming etc. with no luck.

I followed directions but the water in the vase just sits there getting old and stale. It should be lowering as it feeds the plant. Phooey!

Great concept and beautiful when it first arrived, but the metal straw/tube thing rusts! It's obvious that the metal would be in contact with water - so why didn't they make it out of something that won't rust??
