As others have said, the set screw on the bearing holder came loose during first operation. I tightened it and it has been fine since.

This bit, along with its cousins the 3001 and 3004 are mainstays in my bit collection. I use them for cutting dados with my exact width dado jig. There are times when nothing but a short length pattern bit will do. A lot of my straight bits have been replaced by fancier or larger diameter spiral bits, but these cannot be replaced in my shop. Having the three common cutting lengths - 1/2", 3/4", and 1" - I feel like I can make any dado or pattern routing cut I might encounter in the shop.Carbide tipped, and long-lasting... these Whiteside bits have proven invaluable in my work.

The bit itself seemed good initially. Sharp and build quality appeared fine. But the set screw worked it's way out within 30 minutes of use, which created a dangerous situation. Now I can't use it at all until (unless) I can find a set screw to secure that collar.

I used this with a template that I machined out of aluminum for an electric guitar neck pocket. The bit cut away a shaving of aluminum, so the bit was not running exactly true with the bearing. Maybe I was expecting too much - machinist accuracy from a woodworking bit, but the pocket I routed came out oversized. I'll have to shim the pocket with a piece of veneer, so it's workable and I don't regret the purchase. Maybe a bit available from Stewart MacDonald would be more accurate, but I needed a longer shaft than that one had.

So far I have used this on maple to cut box joints. It worked well and cut through without splintering the wood.

Whiteside bits are the best. Unusual size too. Nobody else makes this size bit. I use it for pickup cavity routing on my custom electric guitars.
