I don’t know what it is with cheap tuners these days. I have one set that is fantastic and several that are not too great. These fall into the not too great category. They do the job and the price is right so don’t think they are unusable. They just aren’t very smooth. They seem to have some sticky spots. Again, I knew what I was buying and I haven’t exactly removed them for something better, but there is better out there. I just can’t justify spending lots of money on tuners for my project guitars. They can always be upgraded later.
