The Starrett 264D center punch is 4" long and has a 3/8" thick square shank with a 1/8" (3 mm) diameter tapered point. The punch has a tempered steel shank for strength and a hardened steel point for wear resistance. The shank is knurled for grip and has a square shape to prevent it from rolling when placed on a work surface.

Center punches make small dimple marks in a workpiece to help guide a drill bit. Manual center punches have a metal shank with a point and are typically tapped with a ball-peen hammer to mark the material. Automatic center punches have an internal spring mechanism that enables them to mark the material without using a hammer, leaving one hand free for steadying the work.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company, founded in 1880, is headquartered in Athol, MA.

I drill a lot of holes at work. I bought this expecting the tip to lats longer than snap on or mayhew between sharpening, and it does but only slightly. I use this one mostly when I need to see the marks better. I use the others hen I need a large mark cause this one really rings in the hand when you hit it very hard with a 32 oz dead blow. I have never had to harden/re-heat treat it, which I do with the others about once a year.

It's a Starrett. What else do you need to say? There's nothing fancy about it. It's a manual center punch. But, it is machined exquisitely, it is a joy to use, and it has a square shank so it won't roll off the work bench. Love it!
