The Starrett 120AM-150 dial caliper measures 0 to 150 mm with 0.02 mm accuracy. This handy measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the sharp, black graduations on the No-glare, satin-finished bar, crisp lines on the yellow dial face, and knife edge contacts for inside and outside measurements. One full revolution of the dial is equivalent to 2 mm. The jaw depths on this caliper are approximately 1-1/2” or 38 mm for the outside measuring jaws and 5/8" or 16 mm on the inside measuring jaws. The jaw depths are approximately 1-1/2” or 38 mm for the outside measuring jaws and 5/8" or 16 mm on the inside measuring jaws. The knife-edge contacts can be used to scribe parallel lines on the workpiece. This caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. The lock screw locks the dial bezel and holds the sliding jaw in position. The depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers which offer a detachable depth rod, or None at all. The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Positive split gear anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls, which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; split gear systems actually split the gear into two gears, each half as thick as the original gear. One of these gears is then fixed to the shaft while the other gear is allowed to turn. The free-turning gear is connected to coil springs that rotate it until all the backlash in the control system has been eliminated.

I want to return the Starrett calipers (model 120AM-150) because there are several problems with the product and I do not believe it shares the quality which I associate with the Starrett brand name. First, the face of the dial does not say “American Made”. The photo of the caliper with the shipment shows a dial with this claim and so does the photo of the product from your website. Second, the action of the dial caliper is not smooth. I have an existing Starrett 120 caliper here for comparison and there is no resemblance between the quality of my current caliper and the one you sent. The purchased caliper is rough and sticky and has areas where the action is slowed while it is being moved back and forth under constant pressure. Third, the incremental markings are improperly located. When I move the dial to 0.9mm the engraved black marking for 1mm is completely exposed and bare metal is exposed beyond the marking. This would result in you reading 1.9mm when the actual measurement is 0.9mm. My current Starrett caliper does not expose any part of the engraved black marking until the watch hand passes “0” on the face of the dial. I am performing this test after adjusting the dial to “0” when the caliper is completely closed. I want to warn others who may be in the market about my experience. I would like to add after returning this caliper I made a second purchase from a reputable authorized Starrett dealer of the same Starrett (model 120AM-150) and got the exact same results. The quality of both new calipers does not match my expectations, or the premium price.

I compared it with a far cheaper dial caliper (maybe $30) and to my best observation it did not provide a better or more precise measurement; they both provided the same measurement. The one I used before, does not even have the manufacturer name, but it appears well made and it is very popular. So, not always an expensive tool is better.

I just received my caliper today and it doesn’t have “American Made” in the dial as it does in the product image. Also it came in a plastic box not a wooden one like the picture. Also has scratches on the plastic outer ring. So is this a fake or what?EDIT: After using this Caliper for a few weeks now, I decided to change my rating to 5 stars because, while Amazon did put inaccurate product photos, this caliper is fantastic. Also, I contacted Starrett and they confirmed it is authentic. I use it on daily basis and I love it. Very accurate and repeatable.
