Frequently Asked Questions

Is Picaridin as Effective as DEET?

Picaridin is the perfect balance of efficacy, safety, and user-friendliness. It repels a wide variety of pests including mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, sand flies, gnats, chiggers, and midges.

One of the longest lasting repellents available, it provides up to 14 hours of protection against mosquitoes and ticks (using the lotion; up to 12 hours for spray models), and up to 8 hours against a variety of flies, chiggers, and gnats.

Is Picaridin Safe for the Whole Family?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the active ingredient Icaridin (which is how Picaridin is known around the world) as the product of choice for malaria prophylaxis.*

Icaridin is recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Canadian Advisory Committee on Tropical Medicine and Travel for travelers six months to 12 years of age.**

Available as Lotion and Spray

  • Non-greasy, Fragrence Free, Odorless
  • Picaridin won't damage plastics or synthetic coatings
  • Lotion lasts up to 14 hours
  • Spray lasts up to 12 hours
  • Available as a spray pump in 4-ounce, 3-ounce, plus 6-ounce continuous spray
  • Also available in institutional-sized lotion pump dispensers

Should I Use a Lotion or Spray Repellent?

Lotions last longer than sprays. Sprays have the advantage of being able to be applied to clothing where it remains effective longer than on skin. Since repellents work as a 3 inch barrier, clothing applications can often protect 6 inches away from exposed skin, reducing your usage on skin. For optimal protection Sawyer recommends lotion on the skin and spray on the clothing.

This stuff works! However, the package it shipped in allowed the bottle to be smashed and I lost product in the plastic bag it was shipped in. That’s why I only gave it 4 stars.

I am one of those people that is really attractive to mosquitoes so I seem to get bitten much more than other people around me. Also, I have a pretty strong reaction to mosquito bites--lots of intense swelling and itching. Of all the mosquito repellants I have tried, this one works the best and lasts the longest. The smell is pleasant and it goes on fairly clean--not sticky/greasy. A little goes a long way, so it is pretty economical.

Living in Port Sulphur, LA, where sand gnats and mosquitoes are everywhere for most of the year, this insect repellent has been an absolute lifesaver! This is my second purchase of the large size, and the first one lasted six months for my family of four.I love that I can refill my smaller bottle to keep in my purse, making it easy to have on hand wherever I go. I even took the travel-sized one with me to Mexico and avoided mosquito bites completely! If you need a reliable, long-lasting repellent, this is it. Highly recommend!

This is the 3rd time we've purchased this item. Living in SW Florida can be quite a buggy experience. Over the years we have been pleasantly protected from insect onsluaght that plaques our neighbors using different products. I think individual body chemistry may interact with repellants and have some work better than others. For our family, and our body chemistry this had been a godsend and hopefully will continue to be effective from all the biting creatures that seek out our blood.;-]

This stuff is awesome. We purchased some waterfront land on the ocean in Va. and have an off-grid camp set up while we slowly build and upgrade the property into our eventual retirement home/farm. The tick, mosquito, fly and gnat populations in this area are insane. I despise ticks especially since one tried to kill me by infecting me with tick fever when I was 5 years old and another gave my son Lymes Disease and put him in intensive care when he was also 5. Both of us were sent to John's Hopkins as 5 year olds because of ticks.I also hate bugspray. It's expensive, the cans of spray don't last long enough and if you leave them sit they'll eventually become empty on their own so stocking up doesn't help much. I started looking for another solution and in 2021 I bought 1 quart of this Picaridin cream. I'm still using the same quart in 2024. Full disclosure, I was the only one in my family that had been using it because everyone else is lazy. You can't just spray yourself real quick and be done. You need to put it on like sunscreen but it doesn't take that much. I'm 6'-2" and 240lbs. I use maybe 2 1/2 squirts of the pump to cover my feet, legs, arms, neck and head. I even rub a little through my hair. I spray my shirt with some form of DEET before I put it on. That's it. It lasts pretty much all day, except the mosquitoes will get me through my shirt later in the day because the DEET will wear off. My family will go through several cans of bugspray to my 2 squirts of Picaridin. The last trip out they finally realized that bugspray actually kinda sucks. So I'm on here buying another quart because I don't want to run out.I bought some cheap rubber gloves from Harbor Freight that I've started wearing when I put on the cream so I'm not eating it off my fingers later in the day. It doesn't wash off really easy which is a good thing, especially if you are a sweater or get in the water. Getting in the water will deminish it's effectiveness but I think it sticks on to you better than spray without a doubt. This stuff also dries quickly, the feeling of it on your skin is much more comfortable than bugspray and it doesn't smell nearly as bad.Mosquitoes absolutely hate it. I've watched them turn complete 180's as soon as they make contact with me. Gnats will land on you but they will not bite. They can still be pretty annoying if you are fishing at night because they'll swarm and tickle you but they do the same with all the other repellants. It repels chiggers and ticks great but if you are spending time in the places I do, you still need to check your underwear band and the other nooks and crannies down in that area where you didn't apply anything. The value this stuff brings is undeniable. $50 for a quart that could last you years as opposed to an $8 can of OFF that will last 1 person a couple days at best and that is assuming you use it up before it dries up on its own, unused. That's it. It is good stuff. In my opinion, and I think I would know, it is more effective, last longer, feels cleaner and is way more affordable then the other altermatives. If you get into the outdoors a lot, buy a quart. You won't regret it.

If you're looking for a reliable insect repellent that doesn't compromise on comfort, the Sawyer Products SP564 Premium Insect Repellent Lotion with 20% Picaridin is a standout choice.Exceptional Protection Against Biting InsectsThis lotion contains 20% Picaridin, which has proven to be as effective as DEET in repelling a wide range of pests. It's also virtually odorless, so you won't be left with that strong chemical smell common with other repellents.Skin-Friendly and Suitable for the Whole FamilyThe formula is gentle on the skin, which is great for those with sensitivities. I've used it on both adults and children without any irritation. Plus, it's safe to apply on clothing and gear without causing damage or stains.Convenient Size and Easy ApplicationThe 4-ounce tube is perfect for travel and fits easily into backpacks or pockets. The lotion format allows for precise application, ensuring you cover all exposed areas thoroughly. This makes it more efficient than aerosol sprays that can miss spots or get carried away by the wind. Why Choose Picaridin Over DEET?Picaridin is a newer repellent that offers similar efficacy to DEET but with several benefits:No Damage to Gear: Unlike DEET, Picaridin doesn't harm plastics or synthetic materials.Pleasant to Use: It's less oily and has no strong odor.Safe and Effective: Provides long-lasting protection without compromising safety.Pros:Long-lasting insect protectionNon-greasy, fast-absorbing lotionOdorless and gentle on skinSafe for use on clothing and gearCompact and travel-friendly sizeCons:Requires reapplication after swimming or heavy sweatingFinal VerdictThe Sawyer Products SP564 Premium Insect Repellent Lotion is a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone looking to protect themselves from biting insects comfortably and effectively. I have used this product in both Thailand and Indonesia and so far it has worked brilliantly. It's probably the first time I've holidayed without the nuisance of itchy bites! It seems to last all day unless it is washed off, I didn't think about this when I went for a foot massage one evening and ended up with a couple of bites on my ankle; it's probably a good idea to carry it with you in such instances. What I really like about it is that it isn't sticky and oily like the formulas on sale in the UK. Be aware that you will need to allow around 3 weeks for delivery from the USA so order it early. It really is worth that little bit of extra hassle - highly recommended!
