I am always looking for new ways to dress up my houseplants. Since I typically keep my houseplants in their plastic nursery pots and then place them inside a decorative ceramic cachepot, I need something to cover up all that plastic. Typically, I use sphagnum or Spanish moss to do this, however, now that I’ve tried coco fiber, I will start varying up the top dressing.Coco fiber or coir is the natural fiber extracted from the outer husk of a coconut. It’s used to make everything from welcome door mats to window box planter liners. Keep in mind coir's texture (wiry) and color (tan to brown) when pairing it with your favorite plants.Coco fiber is messy, so it’s best to open the bag outside or inside on a planting mat, spread out newspaper or cardboard on a table. This brand sends the cocoa fiber in a flat mat, it’s up to you to gently separate what you need from the matted coir. Keep in mind a little coir, goes a long way, so start out by taking less than you think you need, you can always grab some more. I recommend separating coir by hand, don’t take scissors to it, that will just make a mess and ruin the look of the fibers.I wish this item came in a reuseable bag, since it didn’t, I’m going to see how it holds up in a Ziplock bag.

I bought this to cover the top of a big pot holding an Enchanted Incense Gerbera. (an exotic tree from Thailand, similar to a Plumeria). Hoping it will help protect the soil from the baking Florida Sun. There was enough to cover the pot so I'm satisfied.

I used this fiber to cover the soil for an old rubber plant that I've had for about 25 years. It's in a big pot and I will never be repotting it so I maintain good soil and thought it was about time I offer it some moisture protection. This package was barely enough and I may have to get another but it looks good and I'm sure the tree appreciates the care. It's nice moisture retaining fiber and yes, I talk to my plants.

This Long Coconut Husk Fiber is a versatile and eco-friendly option for gardening and crafting. The natural coconut fiber is lightweight but strong. It isn't as easy to handle as I'd like, it is tangled and a little messy to pull apart, so definitely have a good space set up when you want to use it. The amount provided should go pretty far, depending on your purpose. I used mine for 3 potted plants and have a lot left. The fibers give a clean, polished look when used to top soil on indoor plants. Overall, it’s a practical and natural solution for those looking to enhance their plants or get creative with DIY projects.

This package of cocoanut husk is just perfect for covering the top of the planter I've filled with fake flowers for the front porch. Just enough to cover the floral foam but not so much I have find a place to store the excess.. Exactly what I needed.

It turns out the non-edible portions of coconut husks have sorts of great uses. Coco coir has taken the gardening world by storm as a peat replacement, growing medium, soil amendment, etc. Similar, but with long fibers (instead of chopped up into fine fibers), coconut husk fiber has all sorts of great uses for your plants or for a host of crafts projects. My preferred use has been to add to the top of my houseplants, especially the ones I put on my porch. The husks provide a natural way to reduce water evaporation from the soil. They give a mulched look to the plants. All of this is in a natural way. The husks, of course, will degrade over time giving nutrients to the soil. This, of course, does not begin to describe the various craft projects like simulating nests, giving the look of the ground, adding a whispy texture, etc., where the only limit is your imagination. This coconut husk fiber is a versatile addition for gardening or arts projects.
