Each of the 3 width nibs is fixed in its own barrel. All I have to do is to screw the nib and barrel required into the pen itself and I’m away - scripting!!! Couldn’t be easier to use.

This is a fountain pen for calligraphy. Unlike regular fountain pens, the Joy has an elongated barrel (something I didn't realize when I ordered it.) It comes with 3 nibs sections: 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm. The pen has an oval ink window and the characteristic Lamy U-shaped clip in bright red on the black plastic barrel. The nib is steel and able to handle sharp lines and broad ones with ease. It comes in a handsome brushed aluminum box with foam dividers to hold the nibs, barrel, a box of cartridges and even two caps for the cartridges.Good points: This pen writes well for italics and even engrossing script. The ink flow is good but not too liquid. Changing nibs is easy--screw on a new section and you are good to go.Bad points: I prefer to use my own inks, and this does not come with a converter. You can buy a two-pack of for an addtional ten bucks, but I would have preferred one converter to be included rather than a box of an additional five cartridges. Most people I know use converters to take advantage of the many beautiful new inks available in so many colors.The wider nibs drag a bit--this is not the smoothest and fastest pen, but that may be a function of the width of the nib. You have to cap it between writing, or it is hard to start without priming. Capped, it writes immediately (in my hands.)You cannot post the cap.The longer barrel makes writing less tiring--the pen is very balanced. I like it for italics and calligrapny and find it a lot less tiring than a standard fountain pen. For the price, this is an excellent calligraphy set and I am happy with it.

As a simple noodler with calligraphy pens, I've never invested in really expensive pens - but I've certainly bought many calligraphy "sets" over the years. The ongoing quest was always for pens that were comfortable to hold, made good lines, didn't skip or require a lot of tapping or shaking to get the ink flowing again, and enabled me to write smoothly. Had I found this set sooner, I would certainly not have felt the need to invest in so many of the horrible sets cluttering up my desk drawers today.The Lamy Joy pen is long and tapered; the balance just feels good in your hand. The grip is triangular and easy to hold for prolonged periods, but without requiring a "death grip" on the pen.Lamy fountain pens (Joy, Safari, Al-Star, etc.) are famous for allowing you to easily change nibs. Using a piece of tape, you can pull one nib off and slide another on the ink feed. Since this set comes with three ink feeds, each with a separate calligraphy nib, all you have to do is unscrew one and screw in another size. It couldn't be easier. But if you happen to drop a pen and bend the nib, it's easy to replace that piece. The nibs are readily available at many art and office supply shops as well as on line.The steel nibs that come with this set are a nice range of sizes: 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9. You will be able to get substantial use from all three. They're suitable for correspondence, note taking, journaling, and the 1.9 is excellent for slightly larger cards. (Contrast that with some other calligraphy sets where the smallest tip is indistinguishable from a standard round pen point and the largest nib feels like you're writing with the blade of a shovel.)Lamy cartridges are proprietary but easy to come by due to to the popularity of the wide range of Lamy fountain pens. Although this kit doesn't include the Z-24 ink converter, you can find them easily and inexpensively and then use your own bottled ink to fill the pen. This not only gives you control of the colors you use, but it will make a difference in your writing. Some inks flow more freely than others, which makes a big difference depending on the nib and the paper you want to use.The set comes in an attractive, brushed metal finish box with the Lamy Joy logo on the lid. Inside, there is the Joy pen, cap, three nibs on ink feeds, a box of cartridges and a booklet that talks about the pen and shows you how to make lines, although it doesn't include any sample alphabets to copy.To sum it up, this set may be a bit more expensive than some you can find in the stationary aisle of the drugstore or in craft shops, but it will truly enable you to write smoothly without fits and starts and scratching all over the paper. Lamy pens and inks are made in Germany to very exacting quality standards. Highly recommended.
