CTA Tools 2101 Oil Pump Primer compatible with GM is designed to prime the lubricating system of new and rebuilt engines. It works by sending oil to the internal moving parts before the first start. The 2101 should be used with a 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch reversible drill. Heavy-duty construction allows for strength and durability. I bought this thinking it would do the job. Sadly, it does not fully pressurize the system. It will build pressure but will not send it through journals. The aluminum is tool small and oil simply spills right over it. Still a borescope through the drain in the cylinder head and you will see this. It does not seal. Why wouldn't they just cut grooves in the aluminum and then use o-rings to seal the area? It would be super easy to do this. Then you would actually have a fully pre-oiled engine. But this tool WILL NOT pre-oil the whole engine, it barely does the drivers side, it will not build the pressure needed to get a true pre-oil. Use an old distributor, its your best bet, this tool is garbage.

Dropped right in and engage oil pump drive. Allowed me to prime the oil system alighn the oil pump drive so I could install the distributoron the stand. Since the distributor cant go in or out once installedin the boat this was very convenient.

Like I expected, the oil gallery barrel was to small for my SBC (1978 4-bolt). The distributor was 31.7mm but this tool was 30.8mm in diameter. The oil just dumped into the lifter valley.I applied 1-2 layers of 3M elec tape, carefully inserted by hand so it didn't distort, then had oil at the lifters in seconds. The tape doesn't rub off since the barrel spins on the shaft.

Product feels sturdy and strong but doesn't make a good seal at oil gallery. I had to put several layers of electric tape to make a seal to build oil pressure at heads. Also some machineing dabiri was left in the tool from factory. Overall it does work but use caution and inspect before use.

Item worked really well. I may never use it again but was worth the money even so. Nothing to do with the item itself but use a 1/2" drill to turn the pump. I burned up my 3/8" drill not realizing just how much torque was required to turn the pump.

Used the tool to prime a rebuilt 283 V8 after placing the engine back in the car, work went fine, but if did it again would prime the engine while it was still out of the car just because it would be easier to get too.Also used the tool to line up the oil pump shaft to the distributor when installing the distributor so the rotor is aligned to the #1 spark plug wire while #1 piston was at top dead center with both valves closed. Placed marks on top of the primer tool shaft that lined up with the slot at the bottom of the shaft, and made it easy to then make the needed oil pump shaft adjustments to align the rotor on the distributor to #1 plug wire when the distributor is in the fully seated position.Just remember you need to turn the distributor slightly back from the final fully down and seated position, as the gears on the distributor and cam shaft will cause the distributor to turn slightly as you re-insert it into the engine.I placed a mark on the distributor cap base plate, (plate the points and cap are attached too), at the point the #1 wire location should be with the distributor in final desired placement, and another at the position the rotor needed to be when starting it back in to compensate for the gear meshing start point.When the oil pump shaft slot was correct as adjusted by my hand turning the primer tool, the distributor dropped right in. Much easier I thought than using a screwdriver to turn the pump shaft, as the tool lines it's self up to the slot in the pump shaft, where as a screwdriver is always missing the shafts slot.So you get two tools in one, both useful and at a good price and well made.
