Used this automatic plant watering mat this spring for seedlings for the season. It seemed to work pretty well overall. It really depends on the plant type I paired with the mat on how well it turned out. I'll likely continue using it in the future, being careful to pair it only with plants I know respond well

I've done wicking strings for potted plants before and had great success but never had anything for trays. With these I can essentially hold a decent amount of water under my seedlings without getting fungus gnats, root rot or imbalanced wicking action. They are very easy to cut to size and do a good job pulling and releasing water when needed.

I wanted to love this, but I couldn't get the wicking to work with my seedling starters. It was easy to cut to size for the trays and it did hold water, but not for wicking.

I started some seedlings just before I was leaving for a 10 day vacation, which I know was poor timing. I needed to start some Spring seedlings near the end of February, but I also knew I was going on a long vacation, so I bought this self watering system to take care of them while I was gone. I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.Two weeks before this 10-day vacation, I had some other seedlings that needed to stay moist for a long weekend (4 days) but when I came home I found them totally dried out. I was really hoping this wouldn’t happen again.When I came back from my 10 day vacation, with this system in place, my seedlings were moist, healthy, and happy.

This fabric doesn't wick. I have it on four trays. Water still in the lower tray, fabric dry as a bone. I realized it when I found dieing seedlings.

I’m using this to start seeds. You do have to figure out how high the water receptacle needs to be compared to the tray so it might take a few days of experimenting to get it right. I had to raise the trays to keep them from being too wet. I would buy this again but it does need to be checked at least daily because the water height in the receptacle changes and affects the balance. This is not really a set up and walk away solution if that is what you require.
