The bareback pad itself is excellent quality. It fits my draft cross perfectly. The stirrups are the only downfall, very cheap and hard to adjust. I had to replace them, but otherwise a good product.

The stirrups are very unsafe. I tried to use them to mount and they came off with my weight, I'm about 140 pounds. I checked the stirrup before trying to mount and it didn't budge, put my foot in the stirrup (there's nothing to grab onto to help you pull yourself up) and almost had my body up when the stirrup came off, and I fell to the ground with it, falling on my ankle! I ended up tying the stirrup girth style so that it wouldn't come off while riding. The pad part for the horse was ok. It is exactly what it says, as it almost feels like you are bareback. I dont like the girth tie as one side has holes, I feel like they might break. I do like that it has bags to put stuff in. One word can describe this saddle: cheap. As in cheaply made. Not sure if the price is worth it. Going to try to use it a few times to see.

I absolutely love this! I added a nylon breast collar and removed the stirrups. I have used it for trail rides and rides down the road.

I had been riding a simple bareback pad on my 16hh appendix QH for months and bought a Tough-1 as it had features I was seeking. I ride mountain trails in New Mexico which can be rocky, steep, and twisty, and ride at all gaits. For the last 18 months I've only ridden with a side pull halter, i.e., no bit.The Tough-1 was larger than expected and appears to be well-made. I've had it a month now and after about 30 hours of use there's no signs of wear. It is easy to clean and a joy to handle due to its light weight. My horse likes it, too.The first thing I did with the Tough-1 was to remove the stirrups. It is unwise to use stirrups on any bareback pad, as the pad will rotate under force since there's nothing to keep it from doing so. If you are riding without stirrups and dismount a tall horse on the trail you'd better have a plan to get back on! Several reviewers have made mention of the Tough-1 stirrups not living up to expectations. If you need stirrups then use a western or English saddle and slowly work up to riding without using stirrups. The Tough-1 did not come with a cinch so I used a 24" Weaver Smart Cinch. I found that the Tough-1 slid backwards as others have reported and did so rather quickly after powering up a very steep fire break. I moved the cinch rigging forward to the D rings that previously held the stirrups and this helped but still wasn't enough for fast hilly trails. The addition of a 3-piece breast collar did the trick so now the pad slides backwards very little.Do not rely upon the hand grip on the Tough-1 to establish side-to-side stability. As with any pad it will simply rotate no matter how tightly it was cinched and you may fall off. Grab a handful of mane in such a situation - and be able to do so quickly! My Cashel horn bag fit perfectly, giving a total of four storage areas. I threaded the Cashel's velcro ties through the Tough-1's hand grip, and then used the forward two D-rings to anchor the bag. These same D-rings also attach to the breast collar. The Tough-1 has a total of 5 D-rings. I use the D-ring on the right side of the hand grip for the lanyard of my Hit-Air Advantage Air Vest, which I never ride without. Twice now the Hit-Air has saved me from serious injury. I also never ride without my Tipperary Sportage 8500 helmet.Riding is fantastic on the Tough-1. The first thing I noticed is that trotting is much more comfortable and requires less thigh pressure than a simple bareback pad. Cantering is far better than a western saddle as you can really get in tune with the horse. It definitely takes less effort to balance on a Tough-1 than on a simple bareback pad. The small foam pommel and cantle add an extra feeling of security and especially on the fast steep stuff. I'd done the same trails with the simple bareback pad but the Tough-1 'cradled' me a little while still retaining good feel. I was barely tired after 3 hour trail rides. If you're looking for a bareback pad with a little padding and need some storage, the Tough-1 is a great solution. This is not a rig for beginners. Be able to ride comfortably on a conventional saddle without using the stirrups or hanging on before you ride a Tough-1 (or any other bareback pad!).

I was working with a horse and we were just not communicating well with a western saddle between us. As soon as I switched to this bareback saddle it made a world of difference. I can feel every muscle move, just as if I were riding bareback, but there is plenty of cushion between my tailbone and his spine and there is a lot of added support from the stirrups and the swells at the front and back if you need them to balance or for the faster gaits. Also HUGE fan of all the extra D rings. I attach a breast collar to mine no problem. It's pretty much like I'm riding in a saddle...only with WAY more contact. My guy seems to like it better and he's responding much faster to much lighter seat cues. I highly recommend this.
