The old plug on our trailer was giving intermittent disconnect messages on our truck. It was so corroded I thought that might be the problem so I replaced it with this plug. It's very well made and well labeled but I learned that the wire colors in a trailer harness appear to be just a suggestion, not a requirement. My trailer had crossed up the red, yellow and brown wires and so it was a little more complicated to get it working but that's not the fault of this plug. Just something for you to keep in mind if you're doing a similar job. Also, this does not come with the Allen wrench you'll need to remove and replace the sheath with. You probably have one from something you've recently put together but just beware. Also, there is no stop on this plug so don't keep tightening it. Stop as soon as you can see the sheath start to expand.

Looks like good sturdy construction all around. The strain relief is so much nicer than the versions with a set screw. The strain relief is a constricting water proof fitting. The smallest (nut fully tightened is 0.55 inch and fully loosened is 0.78 inch. Might be able to get a slightly larger cable trough the rubber seal, but not likely more than about 0.82 inch.Even with a good seal at the cable, the connector end still needs protected. When holding it up to a light, you can see through the connector into the housing. So, if you have a good cable seal, always have the connector hanging downward to keep water out, or, get a cover to put the end into and keep it upward. In any case, I always coat all the metal in the connector with small amount of dielectric grease for protection. The Allen wrench needed for the set screw that holds the connector in the shell is 5/64 inch. There are instructions on the box and on a paper.

The TIROL 7 Way plug is a nice design. I like the cord grip as a separate piece that compresses down to seal against the cord. It is easy to open up and wire. I have a couple trailers and my RV is only a 24' but it has 14awg, 12awg and 10awg wires this is only designed for 16awg to 12awg Max and would be better even if they were all one size smaller. It is not as heavy duty as what my RV requires but it works well on my 9-foot utility trailer. Also, not every color-coded wiring diagram is the same. Make sure you take a picture of your old one and match it up. I wired it matching the colors stamped on the plastic and the taillights were flashing with the left turn signal. I had to rewire but lucky I had the old plug to compare to. There are better termination designs but the screw with a square washer is pretty common. You could crimp a fork terminal on all the wires, and it would attach better. A couple screws on the larger wire felt like they were on the verge of striping. The housing and cord grip felt good once it was assembled. I put a little thread sealant on the cord grip threads and I think it will keep moisture out of the housing pretty well. Moisture can get in around the front of the plug, but I try to always hang my plug when not in use, so water doesn't sit in the contacts. The fit into the trucks socket is smooth and yet tight enough it's not going to make a bad connection.Overall, I wouldn't use it on a larger trailer where the wire sizes and amp load would be too large for the plug but if you use it for a smaller trailer, it is a nice plug and well designed. The box clearly states the wire size don't exceed that and you will be good.

The plug works great, and catches the door latch just right. The wiring diagram in the plug doesn’t match my 01 Ram 2500 or the plug it replaced. Keep that in mind just in case. Several of the latches on the wire fasteners were bent upon arrival. It would also be nice if they threw in a rubber sleeve spacer for the common size 7 wire cable since it doesn’t hug the cable’s jacket tight like most. Other than that, it works.

I needed to replace my OEM RV plug which was providing an intermittent connection. I found the Tirol plug to be comparable except one except for one feature. The Tirol plug had a compression fitting at the cable exit that completely sealed the wire to the plug. It was comprised of a hefty nut that compressed plastic fingers around a rubber gland, completely sealing the wire. This sealing mechanism was far superior to the replaced plug. The blades and terminal core are all brass with the exception of the wire attachment screws. A 2mm Allen wrench is required to remove the wiring core. The pins are color coded and the numbered. For an RV hook-up, use the numbers rather than the colors for proper connection. If you are unsure, the best way is to replace wire for wire individually, take a photo or draw a sketch. The Tirol plug costs a bit more than some others on Amazon, but the sealing and wire restraint is worth the bit of extra cost.
