How to Replace the Timing Belt?
1、Disconnect the negative battery cable. You’ll also need to remove the alternator belt if the serpentine belt is blocking your access to the timing belt.
2、Remove any fittings that are blocking your access to the timing belt. You may have to remove the power steering pump, alternator and/or conditioning compressor. Don’t remove any pressurised fittings from the air conditioning compressor. Remove the distributor cap if your vehicle has one.
3、Align the timing marks: ensure the crankshaft pointer is aligned with the 0 mark on the timing scale. Arrange the distributor with the timing mark on the distributor housing. Position the camshaft pulley timing pointer with the marker on the engine block.
4、Determine whether you need to remove the harmonic balancer pulley to remove the timing belt cover. Remove the bolts securing the timing belt cover.
5、Check for oil leaks around the camshaft, crankshaft seals, oil pan and valve cover. Ensure that there are no engine coolant leaks around the water pump and hose. Repair any leaks before installing the new timing belt.
6、Remove the mounting bolts securing the old timing belt tensioner. Examine the tensioner pulley for dents and cracks and replace if necessary. Slide the old timing belt off the sprockets and position the new timing belt over the pulleys. Be careful not to force the new timing belt.
7、Gradually loosen the tensioner adjustment so that it can swing back against the timing belt. Slide the tensioner into place, but don’t allow it to hit the belt. If you aren’t using a spring-loaded tensioner, tension the belt according to the vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines.
8、Rotate the crankshaft in the direction of normal rotation at least two 360-degree turns to get rid of any slack in the belt and seat the teeth in the pulley grooves.
9、Loosen the tensioner and re-tension the timing belt to meet the vehicle manufacturer guidelines. Test the tension with a tension tester, torque the tensioner and pivot the bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque setting.
10、Re-install any parts that you removed to replace the timing belt, including the timing belt cover. Torque all bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque settings. Reconnect the battery earth cable. Start the engine and check the ignition timing to make any final adjustments.
