Why Anthology Gear?

The foundational principle of Anthology Gear is that a great guitar deserves a great accessory. Whether it be a guitar strap, or an incredibly special gig bag.... it too should be a work of art. Our attention to detail is uncompromising. Every cut, stitch and rivet is worked and reworked until it’s perfect. At Anthology Gear, we fervently work with a drive to create something of lasting value. And beyond our legacy, we hope to create pieces that become a significant part of yours.

The Reticent

Being a musician is about allowing ourselves to be vulnerable. Whether it’s putting ourselves out into the world via a recording or a live performance, it means putting ourselves out for everyone to hear, judge, and analyze. This can be a difficult thing for many of us to accomplish, but also can be intensely rewarding and liberating as one lets their creativity flow.

The Reticent to me symbolizes the introverted, guarded, somewhat inhibited person I am that struggles with allowing myself to be vulnerable. However, when paired with the more gregarious guitar (and perhaps also with the always appreciated extroverted front man), I allow all those bottled up thoughts and feelings to flow freely. I don’t want a loud or obnoxious strap to tell my story. I want the thick, strong, durable comfort of an Anthology Gear full grain leather strap ... rugged, honest, beautifully imperfect. And I’ll tell my story through my music. Reticently.

Full Grain Leather

FULL GRAIN LEATHER

Our straps are hand-made with the highest quality full-grain leathers. All of our leather guitar straps have their natural marks, scrapes and scars, which means they have loads of raw, rugged personality.

Anthology Gear Thread

STRONG THREAD

We use only the strongest industrial grade threads; the same threads used to make parachutes and airbags. That's strength you can trust.

Padding for Comfort

PADDED FOR COMFORT

High density premium padding between leather layers provides a more comfortable playing experience on those long gigs.

A Lesson in Leather

Why Full Grain Leather over Top Grain, Genuine or Bonded Leather?

Full-grain: The best leather money can buy. The closer we get to the surface of the hide, the more dense the fibers and grain. The further you get away from the surface the more likely the leather will weaken and pull apart. Full-grain leather is the strongest, most durable and, best yet, helps distribute the weight of your guitar far better than any other type of leather. Beyond the attributes of strength and durability, full-grain leather also retains the oils and preservatives, causing the leather to burnish and beautify with age. Over time, our leather will develop real, distinguishing character. We never spray paint our leather to look aged or give it personality. Fake distressing is like lip-syncing at a live performance. We don’t do fake. Sure, full-grain is much more expensive, but it’s well worth it. Now, if you’re curious, our list continues with the three other types of leather we don’t use:

Top-grain: Not as strong and durable as full-grain and doesn’t age as well. Top-grain has the very top of the hide shaved off to eliminate aesthetic imperfections. But see, at Anthology Gear, we like these imperfections; they add character to the leather. Top-grain is like digital, auto-tuned vocals. We’re about analog.

Genuine: Genuinely worse than top-grain. When I was younger, I always assumed genuine leather must be good. Hey, it’s “genuine”. Well, so is acne. Next!

Bonded: The hot dog of the leather world. In other words, leftover scraps are ground up and glued together kind of like particleboard. Now you know.

Benefits of Full Grain Leather?

  • It is the strongest, most durable part of the hide.
  • It best distributes the weight of your guitar.
  • It burnishes and beautifies with age.

I do like this strap. Nice quality and feel. Works reasonably well with my Schaller strap locks. They are a bit snug but still work. Price is a touch high but in the ballpark for the quality. I have a few handmade American straps that are only a little more so I may stick with them next time. But overall very nice strap.

This is one of the best leather products I’ve owned and certainly the best guitar straps I’ve ever owned. The designs is simple, which is what I wanted. The leather quality and craftsmanship are both top notch.

I've had my eye out for a leather strap for my bass for a few years now. It's hard to find a good one.I've learned a bit about leather over the years—most of whats on the market terrible. The only guaranteed way I've found to get good leather is: learn about the actual leathers that are available, and see which craftspeople are using them. The problem here is that you'll often find yourself on an Etsy store looking at straps designed by craftspeople who know leather, but probably don't know anything about guitar and bass players. Prices are high; materials are great; design quality is a mystery. Then there are the popular brands (Levy's etc.) that know how to make a guitar strap, but their leather is of dubious quality. Usually they won't give you any details (terrible sign). Sometimes they'll say something like "genuine leather" (even worse sign).Anthology offers a great compromise—they have experience making straps for real musicians, and they use actual good quality leather. They don't advertise the tannery they use, but when I asked they happily told me. It's a Mexican one with an excellent reputation for both quality and sustainability.Their leather is full grain. It's chrome tanned, not vegetable tanned, so some purists won't be happy. But the flipside is that it won't need a long break in, and it will be resistant to moisture (like if you sweat like a horse).I think the prices are just right. Around double what you'd pay for typical "genuine leather," and around half what you'd pay for something made custom from veg-tanned leather by an artisan. My strap is beautifully made, and the leather looks and feels great. It's very comfortable on my shoulder. It will probably outlast me. Maybe give it tiny amount of conditioner every year or two. More often if you sweat all over it.

Love this strap. Only downside is it's slippery from the backside and tends to slide. But overall a well made strat
