Bought it to replace another one which was broken apparently because it was not disconnected by force from the DisplayPort. Remember to press the button to extract from the port otherwise you could broke it too.

I have a X99 system running as a server of sorts, and lacking any iGPU I added an Nvidia 1050 (it accelerates my VMs), but it's all digital with no VGA or DVI-A output. My KVM over IP is alas analog (VGA) only. This takes care of the switch. It clips in place, provides a seemingly clean signal (I see it after it's been converted back to a low bandwidth IP video stream, so I'm not exactly seeing the straight signal), and it always works (unlike say a USB to VGA device which won't work in BIOS or without drivers). It has holes for screwing in a VGA cable, but I must confess I couldn't get it to thread. Unsure as to why, as I've never had an issue. Don't have a need to try any other cables, and I hope it's a one off issue.Anyway, it's affordable, does what I need, and hasn't let me down.

I'm using this adapter with a LCD monitor with a VGA input. And the display is pretty decent, and I like the fact that this adapter comes with an integrated 3.5mm audio port to export the sound while the VGA port displays the image. Another useful port this adapter come with is a Micro USB power one for using the audio port (a short Micro-USB cable is needed to power the sound and it's included). But I plugged a longer power adapter from a cell phone and it worked too. The StarTech.com DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is solid and well designed, but most importantly, it does work.

This has a very specific and narrow use. Most people have the goal of carrying the digital signal from the source to the display! You get the sharpest picture with a digital signal and most monitors have digital inputs. Rather than using Displayport to VGA, you're better off with a digital adapter like a Displayport to DVI or Displayport to HDMI. The digital adapters are better because they pass an untouched digital signal from Displayport to monitor/projector/tv (at least the passive ones). But this active adapter converts the digital Displayport signal to an analog VGA signal. This is useful if your laptop or other device has a full size Displayport but no VGA out AND your device only has a VGA input. Only a few years back, there were a lot of projectors with only VGA inputs. That is where this is useful. It's really for the presenter who travels from boardroom to break room using whatever projector is provided and who needs to make sure he can use anything thrown at him!I have a straight VGA signal from my Nvidia K2200 through the DVI port using a DVI to VGA adapter (passive). I compared the straight through signal to the Startech adapter's signal and found the picture from the Startech Displayport to VGA adapter to be slightly soft compared to the vga signal from the video card. It's not bad, and it's perfectly usable--it's just a bit soft. To be honest, that's kinda what I expect from such an adapter, but you should know that's what you get.You can use the video part of the adapter without the included USB power cord. You only need the USB power cord if you want to use the audio portion. I tried the video both with and without the usb power cord and it had not effect on the picture. If you do want to use the audio portion, you may need to go into your sound settings and change the Displayport sound out to be the sound out you use. In most cases, it's probably easier to use your laptop's sound out rather than this adapter's sound out. You might have cords coming out of both sides of the laptop using the headphone out you already have, but you won't have to use the usb cord nor do you have to change settings!Because of the softness, it's not a long term solution for a monitor you stare at for hours a day. If your monitor only has a VGA port, by all means get a new monitor! But if you travel and use odd projectors often and you don't have a VGA out but you do have a Displayport, WOW, you're one of five people who need this adapter! :) But seriously, it works for what it is if you need it!
