This must be done regularly to ensure squareness and perpendicularity between the spindle and work surface. The spindle square is easier to use and more precise than the traditional method of trimming with a dial test indicator.

I had high hopes for this tool saving me time and frustration. Was sadly disappointed. The tool constantly loses its 0 set when carefully moving it from surface plate to the spindle. I snugged up the set screws and retried which yielded same results. Not sure whats going on a Starrett, but this is the second item i have had to return in 3 months. The first being a Starret 120A-6 dial caliper that would constantly give crazy readings due to sloppy threads on the slide adjustment screws introducing play into the slide. Its sad, but i must say i will know longer buy anything Starrett. Love my ProTram from edge.

A must have for those with any type of CNC mill. Typical Starrett quality. Not much more to say. Top quality components and extremely well made.

Add me to the list of people that got a used spindle square instead of new. After reading the other gentleman's review about receiving a used tool, I had my phone handy for the unboxing. The Amazon package was great, well packed, etc. The Starrett package, on the other hand ... the factory seals were broken and had been re-taped several times with Scotch tape. The Starrett protective carrying case was scratched and scraped, and the cardboard box had quite a few metal chips inside. On opening the carrying case, I found that the back of one of the dial indicators was cracked (hard to see in the picture, look at the lower 1/3 of the back of the dial, from just above the bottom right screw heading left), and there were more metal shavings inside the box. There were no scratches or obvious signs of wear on the shaft of the tool, and the plastic film over the dials was still in place, but this was definitely not a brand new part.Amazon isn't quibbling about the replacement on this, which is a good thing. I should have my (hopefully brand new one) tomorrow. I'll edit the star rating at that time to reflect function and ease of use, but based on the packaging and damage to the tool, I've only given it two stars.UPDATE:After receiving a replacement - again, resealed multiple times, but at least this one wasn't broken - I've updated my review to show 4 stars. It really is a good product and makes my mill setups just breeze by. I'd love to have given it 5 stars, but the hassle of getting it replaced was just silly and I had to take one star off for that.

The old saying, "you get what you pay for" applies here aligning and checking alignment of my mill has never been faster or easier. I am more likely to check the head alignment before starting a close tolerance project than hoping it is true.

Add me to the list of people that got one damaged. It looks like I got the one someone else returned...back plastic plate broke in the same spot and some slight use marks on the shaft. There is a small desiccant pack inside the Starret box. It looks like at one point this desiccant pack was placed under the guage. My BOX also was re-taped. Glad I read the reviews and also had my phone ready..If the back was not cracked, I would more than likely not returned it. But fer 200 bucks...it should be in good shape..mine does not have yellow dials like the picture and the shaft is black. Hopefully the next one will be in better shape.I have some other Starret Tools. I am really surprised that the back plate of the dial indicator is plastic to be honest. That does not seem like Starrett to me.

This is the real thing. Works great. This is one of those things that saves time and frustration. It is made of high quality steel and will last for many years.

I bought this and a Starrett machinist level and paid extra for next day shipping. Both items arrived on time but my excitement quickly subsided upon opening the package. At first I noticed both boxes had previously been opened, and although carefully repacked, I could clearly see both items had been used as both had oily fingerprints and metal shavings on the tool. The spindle square also had marks on the spindle rod from being chucked in a collet and the level was scratched on the bottom. I nearly bought both items used on ebay but for only $20-$30 more figured I would get these "new" on Amazon. Since these were listed as "new" items, I felt short changed.I went through the Amazon return process and to their credit, Amazon paid the return shipping and sent out the replacements next day shipping as well. The replacement level was in a sealed box and was unused but the replacement spindle square box had been re-taped and appeared again to have been used and returned. I went ahead and kept it.Although I was pleased Amazon replaced the items and paid for the shipping, I am annoyed that they are reselling returned items as "new" when they are really "like new, opened box".Also, they spindle square does not appear to be made in the USA, at least it isn't labeled as such.As for the tools, I am happy I spent the money .It does make much shorter work of tramming the head on my Bridgeport, and after using it once, have no regrets.
