This handle can be mounted on the top or side of a smallrig phone cage. While it says hawklock, it's important to note that Smallrig has at least three different mounts called Hawklocks so I recommend carefully checking the compatibility. I wish Smallrig would better distinguish their quick release systems because so far they just call any new system 'Hawklock'.That said, this handle works well in quickly mounting on and off to their own phone cage.

Review for: "SmallRig Rotatable Bilateral Quick Release Side/Top Handle for SmallRig HawkLock Quick Release Ecosystem for Smartphones 4842 "Build quality is very good as most SmallRig product.I use it for my iPhone 15 Pro Max with the cage and SSD card attached, and mostly for Video shooting taking advantage of the ProRes support. The grip is solid and the rotation is smooth and easy. The QR system is on another level, simple, quick but reliable (so far).Overall it is a nice setup which raise the bar for SmartPhone video shooter.

The Rotatable Bilateral QR Handle is another innovation from the ever-busy Smallrig design lab; in this case, they’ve made a vast improvement in the convenience of adjusting, attaching, removing and relocating a side/top handle. And I don’t exaggerate when I say vast.If you’re not familiar with Smallrigs QR Hawklock ecosystem, it’ worth the time to take a look at it, especially if you’re not already invested in a mobile phone camera cage system. And this new QR Handle brings convenience and speed of adjustments to a whole new level. Beside quick release, the handle can be slid laterally in either direction with just the push of a button. As a whole, the handle’s features allow the users grip and orientation to evolve with the shooting situation. It’s an excellent system, just be clear that it revolves around specific Smallrig Camera cages. So, whether shooting video or photos, Smallrigs QR Bilateral Handle allows for smooth tilts, up or down; as a top handle, smooth pans. The rotational adjustment on the clamping arm has just the right amount of dampening for super smooth control of the caged cameras movements; it’s actually a game changer for hand held phone video shooting. With the cage on a tripod, it will provide the same smooth movements. The QR Handle, as is typically the case from Smallrig, is very well designed, and built to a high standard of quality and functionality. Both the locating pins and the QR clamp are firmly spring-loaded; when attached, the locating pins push against the clamp, pulling the handle firmly to the cage, where it is also held with the clamps claws, making for a doubly secure connection. This handle is a version of a similar handle that includes more features, such as a wireless controller and compatibility with the installation of an M.2 SSD. In the case of this handle, it appears Smallrig substituted different top and bottom rubber inserts for those of the other handle. That is likely the reason that the top insert of this handle, when removed, doesn’t reveal a cold shoe; it would be nice if it did. It has tracks similar to a cold shoe, but spaced farther apart. Perhaps Smallrig has plans for, or already has, a Bluetooth shutter release or some other optional accessory that can be place there. The bottom plug holds a small allen key; the only purpose I can find for it is to remove the plate that the QR adapter slides along. It’s not clear to me why that plate would need to be removed, which further suggests that the bottom rubber plug is a replacement for the more featured bottom plug of the other handle. Be that as it may, none of that diminishes the functionality of the handle being reviewed here. I just found it odd that the top plug doesn’t fit a standard cold shoe mount. As I’ve already mentioned, whether you’re already invested in Smallrig’s QR Ecosystem, or considering an investment in a mobile phone cage system, my experience suggests that Smallrig’s offers many advantages over others I’ve tried.

The perfect companion for the Smallrig 4841 handle with SSD. This is a great system. It is very versatile adjusts in about every way you could imagine.I had concerns about the “HawkLock” clip system, but after slamming the handles onto the frame a bunch of times and trying to make them come off, I found it to be a pretty solid system. You have to press the release on both sides to release the handle; pressing one side will not release it.
