There are no downsides to this Shure microphone from an acoustic guitarist/singer point of view. The reproduction is crystal clear with no distortion or effects, which can be easily obtained through the amp if that is what you want. I'm looking for faithful sound reproduction, and that is what you get with the iconic SM58. This one has an on/off switch which I thought would be really useful, but in reality I usually forget it is there and so I forget to use it! Buy this mic if you want a no nonsense bit of kit that is sturdy and well made.

My producer said go with the sm58 so I made the investment. It seems like Nashville musicians are divided on the sm58. Some won't sing without, some hate it. Every stage in town has one, but not everybody will use it. I started using it on my music and podcasts in early 2019. After adding this mic and pitch correcting my vocals, I still get complaints about my singing. In fact, maybe 90% of the critisms I get are because of my vocals. I never have been able to pin down if its an eq problem or something else. So for me, the upgrade from a junk mic to the sm58 didn't change anything. Maybe playlisters just say that stuff so they can cut and paste it, and add another legacy artist in their playlist. I've wondered what it is engineering-wise that would improve my sound, but I am at the limits of my budget, equipment and beyond the limits of what interests me in engineering. It's my belief that engineering really doesn't make a song or musician better. If it does, those people are listening for the wrong reasons, and they aren't my people. Moving forward I've decided that equipment investments are too risky, require too much learning and finesse to make work and I just don't think that this mic or any other is going to really move the needle for getting an artist out of obscurity. Because if listeners are only interested in hearing engineering nuances nowadays, why do they need musicians? They can hear what they want from any major. If the indie's songwriting doesn't garner listeners, his flawless engineering prowess will neither.

What can I say... It's an industry standard mic for a reason. SOLID sound, SOLID construction. This is a recording staple.
