These straps were made by people you never used ratchet straps. Usually you would put the ratchet handle all the way down to lock the ratchet but on these ratchets if you put it into the lock position the ratchet free spools and doesn’t not lock. To have it locked the handle has to be opened

Use ratchet straps alot hauling lumber and mowers. Always hated having to straighten them out before each use. The automatic part makes life a lot easier.
