Larger that its smaller predecessor which I lost recently. Spike and knife are great. Pliers are good for light tasks like tightening or loosening shackles. More robust tasks require a multi tool or better, but this thing fits in my PFD pocket and is there when I need it vs risking my expensive leatherman. Four stars because the sheath split when I placed the knife in it and the “ lanyard” is a joke. Flimsy pc of leather which I’d never trust.

A sailing knife that rusts? It rusted after the first day getting wet with brackish water.

This sailing tool appears to be of good construction and comfortable size. The blade is made in China & is stainless. The marlin spike is robust & locks in place. The pliers appear stronger than what appears in photo. My aluminum case appears cracked around the clip, like the nuts were over tightened. It’ll do the job I’m sure.

I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled after reading others. Knife arrived today. The blade and fid open smoothly. Neither will pop open in my pocket. Further, they both lock firmly. The fid is beefy enough, unless one is separating aircraft carrier-size lines; it is only marginally smaller than the one on my Korean War issue Camillus. Now about that "staggeringly unsafe design" comment from 2018 about the locking bar at the base of the blade ... I can't let it pass. Kershaw, Sog, Benchmade, and a legion of other manufacturers use that design. I have carried such for years. The lock is reliable and safe, unless the user is staggeringly wreckless. I note that Spyderco, Buck, et al, and thankfully Havalon (with their replaceable scalpel blades) do not. Last comment: My Camillus fid locks, but the blade does not. (There was an era when no knife blades locked.) End of sermon. Please pass the plate.

Solid construction and ultimate spartan utility. Started using them in the Navy because having a spike and pliers at your hip is far more useful than a bulky multi-tool with 30 devices you’ll never need. Now I work on the interstate and the spike if more useful than I ever would have imaged. The knife blade steel is badass Japanese steel and will cut rope, plastic, wood, even thin sheet metal if needed.Perfect tool for the minimalist who wears gloves, moves and climbs at work, and needs a reliable tool on on the spot. Any industry, including first responders will really appreciate this tool.

I own a drawerful of high end and very expensive knives. I haven't sailed in years, but was given the Myerchin and it immediately became the knife I carry every day in the office. The blade is perfect for opening envelopes and packages, cutting strings, unsealing wine bottles, and everything else knives are useful for. The pliers - in a much more convenient package than a full blown multi-tool - come in handy all the time, and even the marlinspike is used surprisingly often. Anyway, I promptly lost my gift knife and just as promptly ordered a replacement, which is in the pocket of my suit jacket as I type this. I saw an earlier review suggesting that the blade opens if the knife is carried in a pocket instead of in the sheath, and with my first one that could be the case because the friction was much less than the replacement. There are two Torx screws that can increase the friction, and if that won't do it, Myerchin has excellent customer service. That fifth star is just because I like it so much. Feels very good in the hand, not too big, not too small, not too heavy. It's just right.

I bought this for a sailing knife as I was getting back to my fundamentals of marlin spike seanmanship. I needed a marlin spike and - for the money, this seemed to be suitable. My first voyage with it I was single handing my 26 footer to Put-In-Bay in 25 knot winds when my furler line got tangled and I was unable to reef my Genoa. I was able to crawl up forward and untangle the line inside the bale using the marlin spike. Without it -would have been a disaster. Works well making monkey fists and splicing as well. The serrated knife cuts well however - it IS serrated. Would be nice to also have a sharp plain blade but - could easily convert the serrated edge to plain - yet I haven't. Its a real nice high quality knife for boating. Every Sailor should have one.

Pros:-Easy, one-handed operation of both the serrated knife and the spike. Muscle memory brings either out and puts it back in without a problem.-Pliers are at the ready. Not for heavy work but perfect for that stubborn shackle.-Serrated blade cuts line fast and easy.Cons:-A little bulky.-Blade is a little short and I wish there was an option for a straight blade rather than serrated. I must admit that when sailing I need a cheese cutting knife as often as I need a line cutting knife...I know...-The belt clip is big but removable....don't use it..not really a con...-No flat head screwdriver. Seems like it would have been easy enough to add a little length to one of the stainless chunks and have a flat head screw driver function. It could double as a beer opener which is just as important...not that this thing can't open beers.-For some reason I feel like the lanyard attachment is on the wrong end of the knife. Conclusion: A really great knife at a good price. It replaces my Davis knife I used to carry on the boat. The pliers are invaluable. The blade is sharp and can cut through anything. A few gripes but minor... I can't tell you how many trips in to the cabin this knife has saved me..
