So paying £25 for 12 small pieces of plastic seems like a lot - but you are paying for the design work and testing to get these just right.They do work.I've tried them on wood and plastic recorders.You can fit them two ways round, one way completely silences the recorder, the other way allows a little sound out.I have found that notes in the high register are more of a problem - it's actually better to use the mute in the silent position, then you can hear the air whistling in the correct pitch. In silent mode it is properly silent, you can use this in the same room as someone else and all they'll hear is a bit of air whiffling. You do need a completely quiet environment to be able to use silent mode because it is very quiet.These are the reason I switched to recorder from harmonica, I needed an instrument I could practice in a public space without being overheard.
