I grabbed the Mountain Spring Polar Bear XL to increase R value of my inflatable pad while snow camping. I’m not going to sugar coat it. This thing is huge,… like stop complaining about your bear can huge. At least it's not heavy. Ok maybe a bit heavy. Mine weighed in at 622g (1lb 6oz) on my scale without the bag or straps. While it's the right width for my Inflatable sleeping pad, I don’t see attaching this to my backpack too much.It will, however, most certainly be my winter car camping friend. In fact, I used it while car camping for an ice axe training. It was great insulation between me and the car under my more comfortable pad during some particularly frigid conditions. Note that alone, it is okay, but too bumpy for my head/face and I am a stomach sleeper.I also tested it in my RV. Its density was a GREAT buffer between my RV mattress and the hard plywood base under it. It made a huge difference both physically and thermally, as the RV’s poor insulation and copious vents make for lots of cold air under that plywood.

Great pad to boost the R value of your sleep system. Happy with the purchase. A little bulky but worth it.

I camp in my van and even though I use a memory foam mattress I put to on an extruded aluminum base the has hard, aluminum crossbars so it’s not very comfortable. I found this and I thought it might help. It made all the difference! I can’t even begin to describe the difference in how it feels to sleep on the mattress with this under it. I can’t feel the crossbars at all and my back feels great when I wake up. This pad has improved the quality of my sleep when I’m camping.

This is a pretty nice folding sleep pad. Some people love them and some people hate them. They are definitely a give and take kind of item. You gain with them being light, quick and easy to deploy, and fairly cheap. You give with them being bulky, not quite as comfortable, and usually not as insulating as an air pad. This specific one is not bad overall. It is a little bulkier than the more high end ones, but it does offer a good bit of padding compared to some others and some extra width for larger people. It also has a pretty high R value for a folding pad and the silver side will help reflect your heat back at you. The tan side is definitely a little softer witch actually offers you two choices of firmness though the difference isn't going to be drastically noticeable. It does seem to be quite durable and should last quite a while. It's nice that it comes with the elastic straps and nylon bag, as most of them come with nothing extra. Overall I think it is a really good pad. I'm happy with it and would recommend it.

Absolutely love this pad! The firmness is just right, providing excellent support without feeling too hard. The heat retention is incredible—I stayed warm and cozy all night, even in colder temperatures. Perfect for camping trips and outdoor adventures. Highly recommend!

This easy to pack sleeping mat has been working good for us so far. It is not one of the higher quality mats, but it is comfortable enough for camping on soft earth. If there's any large rocks, you will feel them so I advise using this on soft soil. We won't be using it for any of our big backpacking trips, we have higher quality mats for those but this will work for the smaller, softer areas.

After using a variety of sleeping pads for 20+ years, I started using the accordion-style "egg carton" sleeping pad about 5 years ago and now prefer it because it's light, folds up faster than any other style of sleeping pad, and won't puncture and fail. Also, I like that in a pinch, I can keep the top three pieces folded and have it work as a reasonable pillow. That is not something I could do with any other style of sleeping pad.Since I switched, I have been regularly using a ThermaRest and an ExPed. The Thermaest is the thinnest of the three, but by far the softest. The PolarBear XL feels very similar to the ExPed. They are generally bigger, thicker, and much harder initially. With frequent use, I expect it will begin to soften a bit, based on my experience with the ExPed. I took photos of the three side-by-side so you can get a bit of an idea of how they compare. The PolarBear XL is especially well-suited for larger people just because it's generally a bigger pad. It is also the only pad in this style that came with two large elastics and a really well-made, thin, pad-carrying bag.If you are a wide person, I would recommend this sleeping pad for the extra inches width. Otherwise, I think this sleeping pad matches but does not exceed the quality of the other ones that I own. So then it's a matter of price and/or how many inches you want to shave off in pad size.

Good size spread out; good compact size folded; drawstring carry bag included. A must-use if you camp outdoors with a sleeping bag.

I wanted a closed cell foam pad to be able to sleep on the wet ground or snow with my inflatable sleeping pad. This will certainly keep you dry in that sense. However, I find it to be pretty darn bulky compared to the thermarest one my friend has, who got it for the same price as this one ($75). His was a lot more comfortable too. I only use mine as a water barrier since I have an inflatable pad so comfort isn't a huge concern for me. The only reason I opted for this one is because I'm pretty tall so I wanted the couple extra inches in length. I would certainly spend the extra money if thermarest offered a longer pad than this brand.

I was excited to use this pad, and finally got the chance on a 4-night, 5-day backpacking trip. The first observation about this product, is that it is much larger than similar items of this nature. In terms of cell size, length, and width. For some this might be a bonus, but for longer backpacking trips, it was not ideal.I ended up cutting off one “fold” of the matt to save space. The bag it comes with is nice, but once I cut off one of the “folds,” it was a bit loose, so I didn’t use the bag. Also, most people who are conscientious of weight will opt to forego the bag (and just use the elastic straps, attached to their bag).It fit fine into the loops on the bottom of my bag, although a bit tight of a fit. The pad seemed to actually be slightly less comfortable, due to the larger cell foam size. So even though this seems amazing, it was actually a bit uncomfortable. Although I used it without an inflatable mattress (lesson learned), I still felt it was slightly less comfortable than it could have been.It seems great on paper, but I would not recommend this for backpacking (or at least, extra-light) trips. for camping, it should be find with additional padding or an inflatable mattress underneath. It did help to offset a little bit of the cold (I slept in low to mid 40 degree Fahrenheit temperatures)… but the comfort was less than what I had expected. One star deducted, four stars left for the quality of the item itself.
