I really like the look and feel of these shifters, however they would not move enough cable to get the full range of a shimano MTN 10 speed rear derailleur in indexing mode. I ended up having to add a J Tek shiftmate #5 to make them work. This is no fault of the shifter I just lacked the experience/knowledge to choose the correct one. Once I got the cable ratio worked out with the shiftmate they work just fine.

These SHOULD be compatible with shimano 9 speed mountain derailleurs. I use tiagra 4600 10 spd flat bar shifters with 9 speed mtn derailleur. Tiagra 4700 does not work-different cable pull. Tiagra 4600, 105, ultegra are the same pull ratio. This would allow use of larger rear cogs for a lower, easier on the hills, gearing.

I replaced my road bike handle bars with alt-bars for an upright riding position and couldn’t be happier. They function seamlessly with my Shimono 2 x 10 system.

I am absolutely in love with these shifters. I've been using indexed trigger shifters for years now and was honestly completely unaware that friction shifting was even a thing. I installed these on my double/10-speed setup and decided to set the rear derailleur to friction shifting on a lark. It has been a revelation. The lack of the click that indexed shifters give you letting you know you've changed gears is a bit of a bummer, but in trade you get the ability to quickly and easily change multiple gears nearly instantly, while simultaneously not having to worry about ending up between gears in the case that cable stretch or something else caused your indexing to end up out of whack.Aside from my personal conversion to the cult of friction shifting, these are as well made as anyone could want any bicycle component to be. The body is all metal (with the exception of a bit of plastic around the lever for comfort purposes) and solidly built. In addition, should you want to continuing using indexing on the rear derailleur, there is an option for 10-speed indexing. I have nothing but positive things to say about these shifters and hardily recommend them to anybody wanting an alternative to trigger shifters for flat-bar road/city bike setups. Highly recommended!

These shifters are incredibly crisp and well made. I expect them to last over a decade of regular use. They shift better and fast than many prior Ultregra generations, in my opinion. A must-have for road bikes converted to flat handlebars. Also consider Dura-Ace down-tube shifters.
