About this item

  • LEARN TO PLAY IN MINUTES: strike the center with your whole hand for deep, resonant bass and near the rim with your fingers for high-pitched slap tones; this djembe is a perfect instrument for getting the confidence to play percussion with no experience
  • WHY IT MATTERS: a lot of fun musical adventures don't require time-consuming practice on a drum set; with the Meinl African Style Djembe, you can play in drum circles, acoustic shows with bands, jam with friends and family, or teach students about rhythm
  • ZOOM IN: the shell is hand made out of a single piece of solid mahogany from certified managed forests (NOT glued together wood pieces); the exterior is beautifully hand carved and looks great for decoration in your home or studio
  • DRIVING THE SOUND: you can get a lot of different sounds from its traditional, pre-tuned goat skin rawhide head; this head produces a classic warm, yet clear tone while being remarkably durable, and comes ready to play right out of the box
  • OF NOTE: the djembe comes tuned and ready to play right out of the box; the West African Mali Weave rope tuning system holds a long-lasting pitch, and we pre-stretch the ropes so it sounds great right away (comes with tuning instructions)
  • BY THE NUMBERS: mahogany shell measures 10" wide x 20" tall and weighs about 9.5 lbs; goat skin head measures 10" with an 8" playing area (head is slightly larger than the playing area because it wraps around and down the rim)
  • THE BOTTOM LINE: this is your chance to grab a handmade, all-purpose, sturdy djembe that easily produces a wide range of sound indoors or outside; it's not intimidating to play—even if you're a beginner—and looks beautiful on display

The Meinl fire rhythm series original African rope tuned Djembe has a black finish with hand carved designs. This high quality instrument is crafted with great attention to detail and provides an outstanding, full-volume sound. The Meinl original African style rope tuned Djembe is made from a solid log of plantation grown mahogany. This wood species has the proper density and stability to assure a high quality Djembe from sustainable sources. Our Djembes are headed with hand selected shaved goatskin (shaded black on fire rhythm series). the traditional Mali-Weave tuning system with pre-stretched htp rope is an easy and reliable way to keep the Djembe in tune. The Djembe is first formed on a lathe. The body is then carefully shaped by hand for a perfect bearing edge and proper interior contours. These factors are critical for optimum sound characteristics: deep bass notes, full clear tones, and crisp cutting slaps, all without unwanted overtones

Vielen Dank.

Solid Drum! Solid! Great mid range. This little dude stood out at the drum circle for sure. I was crack’n those down beat Mid rhythms, and turn’n heads left and right as our beautiful sun was setting over the Golf in that western salty sky. In the middle of the circle were the most beautiful creatures majestically convulsing with syncopation to ever stroke produced from little Keeno, the name in which I gave to my drum. And then I was approached by a mathematical sensei who called itself “Seven” or “7”, or however you want pronounce it. He blessed his veins with my rhythmic pounding. It was a surreal experience to say the most. But yeah, great drum for money.

Mine Showed up with a dent in it but it still sounds good, the Djembe is an amazing instrument you can get so many sounds out of it. Every drummer needs one in their collection. Get the big one it's heavier than sin but big boom.

Excellent sound and quality. This model is large and on heavy side. Might consider a smaller version if you plan to travel with it.

I bought it for my husband's 60th birthday. So far he mostly uses it to call me to dinner, but I have hopes that soon he'll join a drumming circle.

My drum arrived on time and in good shape, but the wood has proven to be unstable for shipment to dry climates. My drum developed long cracks in the lower cone and extend into upper portion also. I will let the drum get into this spring and summer and then I will repair it. After all that it still sounds pretty good.
