Primarily we use these to store two kayaks, but you get 8 pieces so there were leftovers to use as general purpose hangers. They work really well for our kayaks, reasonably well for some bikes and they are also good just as general purpose hangers in the garage.The padding is just on the bottom part, seems like they should have run the padding to the end of the bracket. Mounting is simple, two screws on each bracket. The good thing about having hangers that aren't attached to each other is that it makes finding a stud for each one easy, which makes them very sturdy and able to hold quite a bit of weight. The metal is not super thick so I don't thing I'd go hanging a big mower or similar off of them.
