I bought a lot of different types of gold trim for a costume I was working on for my son’s Halloween costume. The photo in the listing doesn’t show how good this trim is, I’m definitely buying more just to have, even though I only used about 1/4 of it.Quality: This 1/2 in wide leather trim is SUCH good quality and looks so much nicer than many others out there. I tried to take a photo where you can see the amount of detail in the texture, but it’s beautifully finished on both sides, very high quality (I would expect this type of quality for a designer purse or jacket), can be easily folded over (there’s already a scored folding line on one side, pictured) to give a finished edge to garments/accessories. It has the soft supple feel of real leather; it isn’t at all plasticky or have the high-gloss finish of many gold trims.Finding the Right Combo: I tried a few different things for the gold accents on this costume, but I ended up using a combination of gold leather strip trim in the 1” width for many of the edges & thicker trim, (THIS) in the 0.5”/5mm width for the thinner accents, and then the braided gold leather cord trim (also gorgecraft) for edging details.Method: This trim cuts easily and leaves VERY clean edges (thank goodness). I used Rub n Buff in “gold leaf” (which does match) on some of the other edges on things that were more obviously unfinished, but this doesn’t really leave rough ends at all. It’s crazy easy to use.I used a combination of hot glue, Loctite Vinyl Fabric & Plastic Flexible, and leather glue. No matter what you use, this is so smooth and thick that it’ll look flawless. I didn’t use iron-on hem tape like heat n’ bond on this project, since I have had some past disasters with heat messing up PU leathers or their finish, so if you plan to use something like that, I would HIGHLY recommend testing it on a scrap piece first and using the iron only on the interior/unfinished side of the seams. Hot glue works great, though, and it doesn’t pucker or wrinkle this trim at all.Color: This trim is a true gold like gold leaf, and the finish is that reflective metallic-type satin. It’s not a high-gloss, but it has the rich golden color and that gold-plated metallic chrome-y or stainless finish that I wish came in a paint bottle a lot of the time.Value: Honestly, this is a steal at the cost I purchased it. I bought it at about $7 for 5 yards of really nice 1/2” wide trim, I’m definitely going to be using it in a lot of other projects! If you get it in different widths, like I did, and the same company’s gold braided leather trim, they work wonderfully together.
