The 79 is an automatic center punch that punches, marks, scribes, and starts drill, nail or screw holes. The spring tensioner adjusts depending on how hard and deep you need the mark to be. The tool is made of an all steel body, the points are hardened steel. Replacing the worn out point is easy, as both the original and replacement are threaded.

Since 2014 cars have windshield glass all the way around, this means Rescue Me, Life Hammers and window punches don't work on them, I guess in the name of security, but that also delays our access to the patients. Still, it is worth testing the window furthest away from the patient, everybody wears glasses and masks. When you pop a window, glass particles become aerosolized, you don't want to breath them or get them in your eyes. Patients get same as soon as we can access them.

I bought this for my general tools model 79 automatic center punch. I haven't had the chance to use it yet to test the steel. I will report back. I've been using my smaller automatic center punch. For now my big one is functional.

This only fits the General Tool product which the best made automatic center punch but it has one caveat:If it rolls off the bench and hits the tip on the floor chances are the tip will break off, hence the need for replacements.

It's just a simple thing, but you can't live without it if your automatic center punch is missing its point. This tip fits a 40-year-old General automatic center punch with 3-56 threads. The fit is loose, but the tip can be tightened adequately by hand, and it doesn't come loose too often in operation. The tip is not hardened. The company, General, manufactures these in India at the moment. The tips aren't as good as the original tips that were made by General before they outsourced manufacturing all over the place. The threaded part is not as long and there is no shoulder above the thread like on the original tips, so the fit isn't as secure. The threads are also a little undersized. I have dozens of the old tips and punches that I have compared this to. I guess it's hard to supervise production when you can't remember where you put your factories.
