The tool worked perfectly to restore a spark plug thread on a Chevrolet aluminum cylinder head.

Having a full set of these thread restoring files saves the day for me at least once a month. I work in field service but it’d work for anyone who’s putting something together that had hardware with damaged threads, such as from shipping or cross-threading, and didn’t have spares. I’ve been lucky with these so far and always made it work. Not for nuts or internal threads.

For as many years as I’ve been working on things mechanical I’ve avoided buying these thread files. Can’t say exactly why I never added any to my tool box but maybe it’s because I always had some other means of cleaning up boogered threads. A few days ago I made up my mind to search for thread files on Amazon to see what’s available, watch prices and read reviews. For an inch-series thread pitch this Gearwrench seemed a good value and had few low-score reviews, so in the shopping cart it goes. I’ve received the file today and am very pleased with the quality. The teeth are well defined and have a reasonably sharp leading edge. To compare, I also purchased a Cresent/Nicholson thread file in metric pitch, and will be writing a review on that poor quality piece of junk once I’m done here. It will be returned and I’ll get the Gearwrench version instead. Yay for Gearwrench!

Every tool box should have two of these, one SAE and one Metric. A very handy tool and a "life saver" when it comes to repairing threads.

Product came in a nice storage case. Seems to be a very well made tool. Works well. Tap is very sharp and cuts threads well. The inserts are a good quality as well as the insertion tools. Very good product and the price was great.

teeth are pretty sharp and looks to be made of decent steel. only used once but cut right into the threads I was looking to straighten out.
