As a tenths indicator, it does function, however, it's not going to compete with a Starrett or Mitutoyo. Really confused by the reviews where guys are acting like they felt ripped off, I mean, it's less than 40 bucks! Starrett is what, 180? Grow up! It's got a couple spots in it's travel where it hangs up, it's not smooth, but I think it may wear in or annoy me until I take it apart and deburr and or polish anything that looks like an issue. But, I knew what to expect, and got exactly that.

New out of the box, AMTAST dial indicator (0.0001" increments) failed to perform known, repeated dimensional measurements. It was tested several times against a calibrated Mitutoyo digital mic (0.000001" incr.) mounted on a metrology block setup. The AMTAST failed any level of acceptance, randomly returning unpredictable and inaccurate readings. For example, it measured several 0.0008" test runs at 0.00095" and then 0.0007" randomly. Return to zero 0.0000" test results also proved to be random and unpredictable. For a mere $38 this AMTAST would be considered a bargain, unless it's useless, and that it is. Instrument has been rejected as defective and returned to Amazon for a refund.

I returned mine for a refund because it arrived new in the non-functioning.When the needled was moved, the dial did not move or was jumpy.Seems like it would be a simple thing to check that things move before being boxed and shipped.Putting whatever into a box and selling it is disrespectful to customers so I will avoid this manufacturer and vendor in the future.

I received this product in a timely manner. And it also worked as it was supposed to. Yes it's slightly on the cheaper side but it worked as it was supposed to and I used it immediately. So I do recommend this product.

I like this tool. It is easy to read with a large dial. The range is actually a little over +/- 10 thou, before you hit the stops. I also set this up to compare against a Starrett micrometer and saw that the indicator was good to 2 tenths. Across 8 thou, or a full dial rev, it was right on, falling out about two tenths around 5 thou. While a little out of spec my setup could have easily introduced that error. It was free of any stiction that I could notice. Moving the Starrett ever so slightly caused the indicator to move, and I didn’t notice any hysteresis. I would recommend this to a friend.
