Nice and easy to read. Smooth action. I haven't had a problem setting up my runout with this yet. I'd buy another if it got trashed. Wish more were designed with contrasting dials and indicators.

A dial indicator is used to measure changes in distance. (This is not an air pressure gauge). This is typically used by machinists or other people who need a way to measure distance changes, such as a small height difference between two flat surfaces, or how perfectly round a cylinder is (or isn't). On the rear, there's a loop so you can bolt this to another piece of equipment, and then this dial will show you distance. Each full revolution of the big red needle is 1/10 inch, and a complete 10 revolutions is an inch. Other names for this kind of device are distance amplifying instruments, dial gauges, dial test indicator, or plunger indicator. The smaller markings (corresponding to seconds on a clock) are all 1/1000th inch.The bevel has two little silver metal markers which can be moved by hand. There's also a screw to tighten or loosen the bezel, but it never tightens totally.In practice, accuracy seems to be around 0.002", which might be totally sufficient for many purposes, including woodworking.
