Atomos Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor

The Atomos Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor is the ultimate accessory for mobile videographers and content creators. Elevate your smartphone video quality with professional-grade features and seamless integration. Ninja Phone takes any HDMI video signal and instantaneously converts it into a high-quality video file format. This video data is then transferred in real-time to USB-C equipped smartphones and tablets, turning them into professional low-latency video monitors, recorders, and live streamers. It’s ideal for professional filmmakers, social media content creators, and a wide range of applications like gaming where you need to record or stream a video source without a computer. It also sets you up for hyper-efficient camera-to-cloud workflows.

Monitor, record and stream with ease

1

Make your phone display a pro video monitor

Turn your smartphone into a top-notch HDR monitor. Connect your camera, and you have access to some of the world’s best portable displays. Atomos’ Ninja Phone app adds a host of professional monitoring tools and even adapts to vertical orientation. Today’s smartphone displays are incredible OLED devices with extraordinary 2,000,000:1 contrast ratios, 460ppi resolution and, with Ninja Phone, the ability to display the output from any HDMI-equipped camera.

2

Capture 10-bit video from any HDMI camera

Ninja Phone is the only way to connect professional cameras with HDMI to a compatible smartphone and record directly into 10-bit Apple ProRes*, the absolute standard for professional video production and post-production, or 10-bit H.265. *iPhone only

Send via 5G or Wi-Fi 6E to social platforms

You won’t find a more compact set-up for streaming professional-grade video directly from your camera. Ninja Phone and an iPhone Max weigh only 335 grams, and the combination is packed with the latest technology, including pristine 10-bit, H.265 encoding, Wi-Fi 6E, and low-latency 5G for the ultimate in mobile live streaming.

Stunning, 10-bit, HDR pipeline

Atomos uses its unparalleled experience in video encoding to pass 10-bit, 1080P HDR video from your camera’s image sensor over HDMI to Ninja Phone, then through USB-C to your smartphone or tablet’s processor. The result is stunning, professional-quality images on your device’s incredible screen, with virtually no latency.

10-bit video preserves massively more picture information, both in terms of color and brightness, than 8-bit formats. The number of colors goes from millions to billions and the brightness range – the highlights and shadows in the image – is more than 4 times that of 8-bit.

Today’s camera sensors all capture more than 10-bit, and all modern TVs, smartphones and tablets have advanced 10-bit HDR screens too, so with Ninja Phone you can deliver the best possible video quality on every shoot!

Superb monitoring tools

Ninja Phone comes with a comprehensive set of monitoring tools for greater control over image, exposure, and composition. It has everything you need to keep in focus, frame your shots perfectly — e.g. for social media platforms — and get the right exposure. It comes with a choice of waveform, zebra, and false color displays.

When on sale for $199 this is a really good way to turn your iPhone into a monitor and even record. A couple changes are needed though for the next version 1) The clamp for the phone is frustrating, it should be taller and open from the top so you can more easily lock it into place, and replace the pins to screw down into a twist knob or similar. 2) Find a way to record directly to a USB-C based hard drive, iPhones have so little storage that recording ProRes 422 eats up your drive incredibly fast. 3) LUT support. As-is, good to use for ProRes Proxy or just HEVC back ups. Manuals and documentation are awful though.

If you have a capable phone then this is an excellent device. I do wish it could do 4K 60 and was able to support external drives. A lut option would be nice too. At $399, this is a rough recommendation considering you’d have to buy the other accessories such as HDMI depending on camera and also way to mount it on camera. However, at $199, I don’t think you can beat this device on value. Hope it gets more updates to improve it in the future.

Since the 4k DCI recording update the Atomos Ninja Phone became really special and most reviewers were too quick to judge. The software is smooth and easy to use with plenty of professional options. Highly recommend.
