Maintaining a Historic Tradition of Excellence

Over a hundred years ago, the embossed metal panel was introduced to the United States as an alternative to the plasterwork brought over by Venetian artisans. The same quality product exists today: American Tin Ceilings uses only the original .010 gauge tin-plated steel representative of turn-of-the-century tin ceilings—never plastic or Styrofoam imitations.

Tin Tile Wall Application

Who would have thought that tin ceiling tiles would look great in lieu of paint or wallpaper! This customer used tin ceiling tile Pattern #2 in Silver Washed White as the focal wall in her kitchen. Installation on a wall is similar to a Backsplash: when installing onto drywall, use nails and construction adhesive, like Liquid Nails or Power Grab by Loctite. The nails will keep the panels tight to the wall while the adhesive dries. You can use any of our tin ceiling and tin backsplash tiles for wall applications.

How-To Questions

How to Measure:

Depending on your layout configuration, you may need more than one tin ceiling kit to complete your space. Learn how to measure for a ceiling with our 1-minute video. Find this video under the product image carousel that is located above.

How to Paint (Unfinished Tiles):

Water-based products cannot be used directly on Unfinished tin ceiling tiles; however, you can use an oil-based primer. Once the tiles have been primed, you are able to use a paint of your choice. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore also offer DTM (direct-to-metal) paints. The DTM paints can be painted directly on the metal and will eliminate the need to use a primer.

How to Install:

When installing onto drywall, use nails and construction adhesive, like Liquid Nails or Power Grab by Loctite. The nails will keep the panels tight to the wall while the adhesive dries. To eliminate water from getting behind the panels, caulk the bottom seam along the countertop with clear silicone or colored caulk.

How to Clean:

We field a lot of questions on how to clean tin ceiling panels. The assumption is they must be hard to clean. The answer is quite the opposite. Rather than using hash abrasive chemicals, you use a damp cloth with either soap or a mild detergent. NOTE: Unfinished tiles must be finished (see section 'How to Paint') otherwise they will rust. Unfinished is an option for those who want to paint them custom colors.

Purchased these for use as a backsplash in a 1920s kitchen. The panels look terrific and came at a good price. I've bought Styrofoam ceiling panels in the past but these are the real deal and about the same price. Fast shipping, carful packaging, American made. Looking forward to seeing them on the wall

I didn't do my research. Because it said "kit" I thought it came with the edge pieces like the backsplash kit from Lowes. The tin panels are beautiful and after I get the pieces they will look really nice in the kitchen. Ordered the edge pieces from the company and they sent them out the next day.

I have purchased 3 different types of panels from American Tin Ceilings. I use it as a backsplash to cover areas that had old tile or Formica glued to the wall previously and I didn’t want to replace the plaster/lath or drywall. Just prior to this purchase, I ordered direct from the company in order to get one of their Artisan colors. I really like their product and how nice the finished project looks. Their Artisan colors are much more expensive, and I’m not as impressed with the finish on it. The Artisan color we got was easy to scratch and lose its finish during installation. I am very impressed with the solid color finishes - they hold up very well during installation and after.

I installed these for my kitchen backsplash. I also got a metal sheet cutter that made clean cuts at the cost of about a 1/4 inch strip but no bending like you get with tin snips. I used up a bunch of old spray paint I had for the backs to keep rust away. Then used copper and bronze metallic spray paint on the tops. Then, I sprayed several coats of polyurethane varnish on top of that. I used construction adhesive to mount them to the drywall . They look great, are easy to clean, and were a whole lot less expensive than tile.

Very nice product EXCEPT factory installed nail holes are not consistently placed in matching locations in the corners and some had 2 corners with holes and some had 4 corners with holes. They are not in consistent locations so they match up. So I have a few exposed corner holes because I had to put nail grid pattern in a new hole that I drilled. This is my only complaint. Still not a big deal. We drilled and added nails every 12 “ and on the ends of the ceiling we stapled with a 1/4” wide narrow crown staple then covered with a small wood crown moulding. Love the finish, color and material thickness but be careful as the finish scratches easy even with your finger u can see micro scratches. Easy to work with and cut. Would buy again.

Used for wall mount. Very thin metal, dents very easily.
