This was used for threading a barrel muzzle for a flash hider. The barrel steel was particularly hard, this did cut good threads when used with some dark thread-cutting compound. Took awhile, though. The adjustable feature is what's desirable for this job, start large and recut if needed to be smaller. Needs a really good die holder.

Dull. Would not cut threads, even opened all the way. I bought this to cut threads on gun barrels so I could use 1/2x28 muzzle devices. Yes the barrels were turned down to 1/2". Had to order another die from a different seller. This die *might* work for chasing threads.

I bought a cheaper 1/2x28 die to do the muzzle threads on my Romy AIMS-74 and that die was fine for roughing out the threads but cut them too big for a muzzle device to go on over them (I tried several muzzle devices, none fit). The problem with the cheap die was that it had no way to adjust tension; you got what you got in terms of thread dimensions. With the Alfa Tools RDSP74798 1/2 x 28" HSS Round Adjustable Die there is a set-screw that allows the die to be tighter or looser on the bar (or, in this case, barrel) that's being threaded. With some patience, you can cut the threads so that they are just right.I've used this die to thread my Romanian AK74 muzzle by chasing the threads made with the cheaper, non-adjustable die. A friend of mine has two of the same rifle and so I threaded both of his too. As to the durability of this die, it should be noted that I used the cheaper die in all cases to rough the threads and then this die to chase the threads and cut them to the final desired dimension. This should put most of the wear on the cheaper die and preserve the longevity of this one.If you're trying to decide between this die and a cheaper one, this is the one to get. I assume that many people (at least in the USA) will be buying a 1/2x28 die to thread a barrel. If that's you, then you don't want to put out-of-spec threads on your barrel. This is the die you want to get the muzzle threads just right. On a final note, make sure to get the bore guide for this die if you're doing muzzle threads. You can find those on Amazon too.
