This rasp works effectively even on the hard maple that I used to test it. One side is rounded and the other is flat, and there's a coarser surface and a finer surface on each end, so it's fairly versatile. It would be nice if it came with a handle that could be moved from one end to the other to make it more comfortable to hold, but a small rag works well enough too.

I ordered this rasp because the one I have isn't very sharp. This rasp is sharp and cuts very fast in pine and moderately fast in mahogany. At 8 inches long it's a little smaller than some, but it's big enough to hold easily and push into the wood. The coarse teeth remove material fast and when I flip it around, the finer teeth clean up the roughness of the coarse cut. The fine teeth leave the wood looking ready for 100 or 120 grit sanding.
