Installation Assistance for the FJA Products Universal Spools
FJA Products Universal Spool Installation for Brother, Hermes, Smith Corona, Royal, Olympia, Facit, Olivetti and many others
The FJA Products Universal spool has an expanding center core. The core has a "star" shape. Please insert with the star side face down into the spool cups. The star can expand and will fit down over the vertical prong (called the spindle). Most spindles are 4mm however the core will expand to fit over larger spindles found in the Olivetti Typewriters and can even be removed if needed for the Remington Typewriters.
When inserting, the spools in your typewriter, you will see a smaller vertical prong. Place the spool over the spindle, and press firmly. Place one of the cutouts of the star over the little prong. This is how the spindle advances the spool when you press the keys to type.

The image above shows the spools are placed properly into the spool cups. Both the lag and lead spools are firmly pressed onto the both the large spindle and the smaller spindle. The spools should be level and should not tip or rock when placed properly in the spool cups.

If your Remington portable has a larger spindle (as shown in the photograph above).
Please push the star shaped center core out of the spools. You can use the back of a pen or a pencil. Once the center core is removed, this will allow you to place the large opening over the large spindle found in some Remington typewriters.
Please remember this item is described as 2 inch diameter, so if your Remington has the small spool that measure 1.5 inches you will need to rewind the new ribbon onto the smaller spools.

Everything I wanted in a replacement ribbon for my 40's Smith Corona Silent portable.-The universal spools snuggled down easily and engaged the little drive sprocket.-The ribbon is nice and inky!-Grommets to trip the auto-reverse arms.And it's made in USA by a vet-owned company.Five Stars!

For ten bucks I expected the bare minimum: ink. As you can see from the pic it's pointless. Barely showing up on the paper, despite is having "ink" that stained my fingertips while installing in my Royal. Uneven and terrible. Pathetic product and not worth a dollar. Zero stars if I could. Shop for another brand.

Bought an old Brother Webster typewriter from early 1960s; took a little work to get old ribbon off, new one on but that's not this product's fault! This ribbon works perfectly. Good, clean ink. Would buy again

Currently I have these in my Royal Caravan and my Royal Sahara (same as Triumph and Adler Tippa S) they fit just fine and print well. They also have the grommet in them which is important for these typewriters as the grommet actuates the automatic ribbon reverse.

My mom has an old electric type writer that was her Daddy's and she needed a replacement. We ordered a universal one, arrived in 2 days!! Fits perfectly with easy to install instructions. Thank goodness we dont have our manual anymore. But what really stands out is that this is manufactured by COMBAT VETERANS in USA!! Love seeing that!!!! This is the second time I have purchased this item. The previous spool and this one fit my Olympia SM3 pefectly and the grommet allows the self-reversing mechanism to work as intended. The only down side to this product is that it is a nylon ribbon so the type is lighter than using a cotton ribbon. Not a result of poor construction or not enough ink, just a function of the type of material.The previous spool lasted awhile, but did eventually dry out. I am hopeful that replacement spools will continue to be available for the forseeable future.Recommend to anyone who is in need of a vintage typewriter spool.

It took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to put this into my 100 year old Underwood typewriter (only because I'm 26 and never saw one before), but the ribbon went in no problem, they turn on each key stroke and the quality is dark and clear. I am very pleased with this product and would certainly order another as soon as my first ribbon is near to running out.It's kind of mind blowing that in this day and age we have so much technological wonder when it comes to creating. Using something mechanical like an old typewriter has this very real feeling as you hit each key (and put your arm into it I might add). Call me a hipster or a dork, but I love using this on my Underwood typewriter.

This universal ribbon is great and has enabled me to resurrect an old typewritter for my mother to use. It should last her for years.
