I'm not a hippiehipster kind of guy. I don't meditate or do yoga. But I saw this and thought it would make a cool gift for a friend... but I ended up keeping it for myself and ordering them another one!It comes with the bowl (obviously), a doughnut-like stand (that also fits inside the bowl, which is a nice touch!), a striker, a burlap bag and instructions, which unfortunately are in Chinese (see photo with translation). It sounds beautiful and feels really well-made (one assumes they'd have to be well-made to sound so pretty!) It also looks really pretty, pretty enough to keep on a shelf for display!I'm very pleased with this purchase, and think it's a great value!

Being a handbell player I thought I would be able to immediately make this bowl sing as the technique is essentially the same and I have had immediate success on a larger singing bowl at an acquaintance's house. It turned out to be a bit trickier than I expected, but I finally figured out what was going wrong and, therefore, could fix it. This bowl doesn't really have a flat surface on the bottom so won't stay in place on a surface, and wouldn't stay on the cushion ring it came with (which is also slightly lopsided, so that doesn't help anything). I started placing the bowl on the palm of my hand and had no problem with producing a singing sound with the wood end of the dowel, but that isn't the "right" end to use for a reason (too much sound from the wood and not the really satisfying reverberations). Occasionally, I could get a singing sound with the sueded end of the dowel, but usually only after tapping first and then usually couldn't sustain the sound...until I figured out that even though I thought my palm was holding the bowl flat, I was every so slightly curving a finger up to help balance the bowl and this bowl just does not tolerate that in the slightest. I cut a small piece of grip shelf liner (really anything that would keep the bowl from sliding around on the palm of the hand, or on a surface when some pressure is applied to the rim of the bowl would work--the grip shelf liner, a loop of painters tape, double sided tape, etc.), put it on the palm of my hand and then set the bowl down. Now I have success in making the bowl sing with the proper, sueded side of the dowel, no initial tap needed, every time. After the first two days when the bowl sounded at a slightly flat B-flat5, in the bowl now consistently produces a slightly sharp E5. Although the material content claims to be only copper, I am pretty sure that both because of the very reasonable price point and the coloring of the metal that the bowl is made of brass (copper and zinc). Either way, it does produce a very satisfying sound--once I figured out how to do it!The following are my steps on how to produce a good sound with this singing bowl:1. Make sure bowl is on a flat surface where it will not tip or slide when medium pressure is applied to its rim2. Start stirring the outside of the rim with the dowel (mallet) with the sueded part of the dowel about halfway above the rim and the dowel almost perpendicular to the flat surface3. With medium/medium-light even pressure, and being sure to keep the dowel in constant contact with the rim of the bowl, continue to stir (making quick circles to start the sound more quickly, or slower to start the sound more gradually)4. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again (easiest is to tap first and then start the circular motions with the wood end of the dowel, then see if you can get the sound started with just the circular motions of the wood end, when successful with that, try tapping first with the suede end of the dowel followed by circular stirring, and finally, with the sueded end start the sound with only the stirring)5. Save the cushion ring to display the bowl on, but don't expect to use it to sing your bowl on (unless your's is much more level than the one I received)

I love singing bowls - but this one is small and hard to make sing. It has a nice sound and resonance, but not amazing and its hard to keep the bowl on the coil because of its size.

Wow! I thought a singing bowl was just a well resonating bell that you tap, but it’s more than that. You give a gentle tap then wipe the stick around the side of the bowl and it gets louder and harmonic! I am only able to get it to sing with the harder wooden end of the stick so far, but that’s only after an hour of practice. I learned that the felt end of the stick will work after enough practice and after it’s broken in.The bell has a nice resonance - a little higher on the scale - it measures as a few cents off of a G5. The initial ring is a little jarring, but when I can get it to resonate, it’s pleasing and satisfying. It’s beautifully painted and matches the little pillow nicely. It’s a small size that fits in the palm of my hand - and is easier to make it sing when it’s in the hand vs on the pillow.
