Wish it was all metal. I hope the plastic doesn't break over time.

It works as advertised, it is well made and fairly easy to read. However I would prefer to see the calibrations printed on both sides of the instrument. Also I have two 20 inch wheeled ebikes and I find this instrument difficult to use because of its large size. One about 2/3 of the size would be great. Thus the reason for only 3 stars. Otherwise , for me it would be a five star item.

I bought this tension meter to properly build a wheel I converted from single-speed to a 3-speed hub. Easy to use and my wheel turned out great. I will be using this for maintenance to keep spoke tension correct. Great tool for the DIY'er.

Tool includes instructions and table for determining the tension based on the spoke diameter and the measurement from the tool. It includes a tool for measuring the diameter of butted spokes, but it won't fit most bladed spokes, so be prepared to break out the calipers if you don't know your bladed spoke dimensions. On my mildly out of true front wheel (older 29" Stan's Crest) with 1.7mm butted spokes, most measured about 17 - 19 on the tool which is outside the range on the chart. Not sure if that means my wheel is significantly under tensioned or if the tool isn't terribly accurate. For the time being, I'm not going to attempt to even the tension and risk putting it more out of true. May give that a shot once I get a truing stand. This note from the item's description initially gave me some cause for concern as to how useful the tool is:"The Spoke Tension Meter is merely a simple tool, so its accuracy may have some degree of error. For a full adjustment, precision instruments are necessary."In reality, even Park Tools states on their site that "A wheel with spokes that are within plus or minus 20% of the wheel’s average spoke tension is generally considered to have acceptable relative tension."So as long as it measures consistently and returns reasonable values, this us adequate to balance spoke tension when building or truing a wheel.
