Siemens standby power mechanical interlock kits provide a means to ensure that the main breaker powered by utility power within a panel is forced to the OFF position when standby power is in use. It also ensures that the standby source is forced to the OFF position when the utility power is in use. This model (ECSBPK04) is designed for use on Ultimate and Rock Solid load centers (125 amp and lower) to connect the main breaker to a 2-pole circuit breaker. It's compatible with MBK100A and MBK125A utility main breaker types and QP, QPH, and HQPH standby main breaker types.

The most common application for an interlock kits is when a portable generator is used to provide back up power to a building. If the utility main breaker in a panel is left in the -"ON"-position while a generator is powering the panel, dangerous back feeding of the utility power lines can occur.

Installing the unit was a little dicey since even after tripping the main breaker you had to clip the upper part of this unit around the main breaker which was hot. In theory the power into the house should probably be shut off but that’s probably not what most people would do since it’s not easy. Once installed I can report that it works very very well and it was well worth utilizing. The best advantage of this unit is even if you take off the face frame of the circuit panel the unit still is attached to the main breaker and generator breaker and it maintains the integrity of keeping the power in the right safe position. Many others I reviewed bolted to the front of the circuit pane face frame so if you remove the face frame the disengagement feature would be compromised. I think it is over priced but if you compare this with a full transfer switch it is by far the way to go. You must know decide which breakers you want on so you don’t over load your generator. A true transfer switch has dedicated breakers which you choose during the transfer switch installation. This unit sends the generator power to all the circuit breaker’s so you must be careful which breakers you leave engaged

As previously stated. This UL listed mechanical interlock leaves space 2 & 4 rendered useless. Other than that well worth it. I installed it for use in a portable generator application for a customer. For covering my own license I installed the interlock. Other than losing two spaces this is a well worth it method of protecting the service lineman.

I would have given this 5 stars if it did not:- take up the top 2 spaces on both the right and left breaker spaces; hence it uses up 4 spaces in all.- shipped undamaged the first time (I bought this on Amazon once and the item handlers/packaging folks shipped it with other items that consequently dinged, dented, and bent this thing out of shape...returned & did not buy it from Amazon again...bunch of brilliant folks you have working for you Amazon. I then bought it from Home Depot Online, delviered to Store for Pickup, and same thing...bunch of brilliant folks at HomeDepot too! I finally found it at Menards, in the store, perfect condition.)- Costs too much - I paid $55. As of April 2014 it sells for $70 on Amazon. Its a few stamped pieces of metal with a rivet or two. Darn thing should cost only $10, maybe $5. (I guess this is YOUR FAULT SIEMENS - if you properly packaged and designed this thing it would probably (1) sell more often and hence the price would drop; and (2) it wouldn't be damaged so easily in online orders, Siemens would see far fewer returns...and oh...the price would drop. ...and more people might buy it.)Otherwise, it does its job well, interlock parts slide smoothly, doesn't bind. it attaches solidly (with one small screw) to the main breaker...no complaints here.

these generator interlock devices are an effective, safe, and relatively inexpensive way to safely integrate your generator into your homes electrical system without concern your power will come back on while the generator is running. You will need to install a subpanel and put the breakers that control the appliances, lighting and any other circuits you intend to power from the generator. These devices eliminate the need for expensive transfer switches and make it impossible to forget turning off the main breaker, while the generator is supplying power to the circuits.Be certain you order the correct interlocks which for the particular main breaker in the subpanel, as they are not interchangeable.

I purchased the Interlock as a safety precaution when I have to use a generator to back feed the electrical panel. The interlock is designed to be used with your main breaker and the two top left breakers (double pull 30 amp breaker). When installed, it is too long and prevents the two top right breakers from working. I had to trim the sides down in order not to lose the top two circuits. Once trimmed, it fit fine and works without a problem.

After installing this kit in a customer's panel, I discovered that the bracket hangs over so far on the right side that it won't let you engage the top two right hand breakers. I fought with this thing for an hour before shuffling breakers around and putting blanks in those spaces. Even the blanks don't fit well because of the overhang. I had to double check the panel and the product to make sure I had the right kit, which I did. The other issue I had with this kit is that it doesn't bolt on to the cover like most of these kits do, it "snaps" on to the breakers themselves. This is a good idea in theory because the interlock is always in place wether the cover is on or off, but the clips are very hard to snap in and once they do snap they are difficult to take back off. Of course if it doesn't fit right (like the one I installed) this is a problem since I had to take it off several times. Ultimately, it will do what it is intended to do, but not without some frustration and modification.
