The cable was 6" to short. Took my bike to Fresno Velo & bought a thumb type shifter which looks like it's built better than the shimano.

I bought this to complement my newer Shimano "Altus" derailleur I installed. I'm glad I did. The shifts are more accurate now than the less reliable "Tourney" drivetrain set up I had been using since buying my new bike last November. Set up took under half an hour because I had to "cut down" the cable housings a little. But now the bike shifts one gear for one click. And the derailleur limit screws seem to prevent "throwing the chain" like it had been doing. I am satisfied with the results of the swap. All my expectations have been met. There is also less noise when shifting gears now. I can't explain it, but it is now a lot smoother. Thanks Shimano!This shifter comes with a new cable too if you are wondering.
