I am absolutely thrilled with the Sangean PR-D5 Portable Radio! This radio is a game-changer for me. The digital tuning is precise, and it makes finding stations a breeze even in a rural setting. The sound quality is fantastic, especially for a portable radio—it delivers clear, crisp audio, whether I'm listening to music or talk radio. The addition of RDS (Radio Data System) is a really nice touch, as it displays station information and song details, which makes the listening experience even more enjoyable. The design is sleek and modern, and the white color looks great in any room. I also have the black model which is equally attractive. It's lightweight and portable, so I can easily move it around the house or take it outside for some relaxing tunes on the patio. The battery life is impressive as well, and when plugged in using the included ADP-H202 Switching Power AC Adapter, it works seamlessly for long listening sessions without worrying about draining the batteries.I also appreciate the convenient presets for my favorite stations, which makes switching between them super easy. Whether I'm using it at home, in the garage, or while on the go, this radio delivers excellent performance every time.Overall, I’m extremely happy with this purchase! The Sangean PR-D5 is an excellent, high-quality portable radio that’s perfect for all my needs. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and easy-to-use radio. Definitely a 5-star product!

First impression is that the sound quality on AM at lower volumes is boxy, stuffy, not sharp or direct in tone as you would expect from other brands (such as Kaito, Sony), lacks clarity, dull and kind of muffled sounding. After a week or two of use, I see that this more mellow sound is less tiring to listen to over longer periods of time. It seems to be lacking in the treble department on AM. FM sounds brighter with more treble which I like. CBC Radio One - FM 91.5 sounds very nice. I see some other Amazon reviewers have noticed the same things about the AM sound but give it time and it will grow on you. I am OK with it now. A reviewer on another website, RadioJayAllen, describes the sound as "a bit on the dull side and mellow sounding". However, after a week or two of use I am getting used to the sound and am liking it now.AUX shows the speakers to be lacking in audio dynamic range (my guess based on the sound). Sound is not sharp compared to one of those Bluetooth speakers that cost a $100 or more CAD.Reception is strong as many reviewers have mentioned and is expected due to the large ferrite bar for AM reception. It can pull in CJAD 800 in Montreal from Ottawa but with static. Radio is in a concrete building and about 15 feet from a large window. I bring the radio next to the window and CJAD comes in loud and clear. It's all about placement, living in a concrete building. The positives about this radio are the station pre-set buttons allowing me to go from channel to channel at the touch of a button. I have about 3 AM stations on pre-set buttons and 3 FM stations but I mostly listen only to CBC Radio One on FM. The convenience of having the pre-set push buttons are also heavily influencing my overall evaluation and decision. If the AM band sounded better, this radio would get a 5 star rating from me. As is, I would give it 4.5 stars. BTW, the Panasonic 2400 radio is surprisingly very good too and for the stations I want to listen to, pulls them in like the Sangean. This is by no means a real test as I would have to go to a location with bad reception and go through the whole dial and compare station by station. But I don't have time for that.

Amazing! Fantastic reception and remarkable sound for a portable radio.I researched for a quality AM/FM radio for about 2 months. Was just about to purchase a CC radio, but discovered the Sangean PR-D5 for a really good price.I have not looked back since purchasing it.It's on 24 hours a day. I bounce between AM and FM listening (the majority of listening is AM).Living in the KW Ontario Canada area (which is rich in choices for radio broadcasts), I have not encountered a problem in reception yet.At night, I have listened to broadcasts as far as from (AM):WBZ 1030 BostonWABC 770 New YorkWGY 810 Albany NYKYW 1060 PhiladelphiaWMAL 630 Washington DC... and a few more ...If you are one of those people that crave a wide range of content on the AM/FM dial, this one will cut it for you.Although the FM reception on this unit is very good and decent, the gem of this radio is the 200mm Ferrite AM Antenna Bar (impressive!)The con?It only holds 5 presets for AM and 5 presets for FM. 10 each should be the minimal. However, if you are just looking for a portable radio to get your local station (who does that?), head on over to Future Shop or wherever, and buy a bum radio for 10 bucks.Buy this!!! 5 Star all the way!!!!:::: 2020 UPDATE :::::I purchased the Sangean PR-D5 in 2013. It is now July 2020.The radio has been on 24 hours a day for the last 7 years. It has not failed yet. Only once have I had to "reboot it" because the RDS became garbled. I simply removed the batteries, unplugged from the wall, and let the unit rest for a few minutes. Viola! The AM reception remains strong and remarkable. The FM performs richly in sound with a decent reach on the airwaves. One small note: The unit gains time. About 5 minutes a month. A quick adjustment every month, no big whoop!I have read reviews where others are complaining about the quality of tone while listening to AM (deep, base or boxed in). This is true. But after a day or so, you won't notice it much more. I think a lot of people are used to listening to tinny, high treble radio (whereas the AM performance on the PR-D5 is not). It is AM - after all.For a tabletop personal radio, the unit is outstanding in deliverance for the price range.Again, people, this is a tabletop radio, not an RX2000 motherboard Pro-Logic Home Theatre Entertainment System! Finally, "the $10 radio at Walmart is just as a good (if not better) as the PR-D5 radio" ... is a bogus claim! The 200mm Ferrite AM Antenna Bar - alone, says so.I thought I'd share my update.Support your local radio station. Tune in and keep listening!!!Cheers.

I bought it on September 2014. Before using the radio I bought Maxcon Voltage Converter 220 To 110V (50 Watt) Step Down because, this item works in 110 volt 20 watts electric supply. (Thanks to an earlier amazon review which warned me about this.)In India AM radio stations are broadcasting in frequencies of multiples of 9. ( For example 684 Hz, 1161 Hz etc) Sangean by default searches for steps of 10Hz increment in frequencies. But in India you have to search in steps of 9 Hz increment. Fortunately this default mode of steps of 10Hz increment can be changed to steps of 9Hz increment. Enjoy clear sound now on........

Half the price of my Tivoli Songbook, the PR-D5 has superior AM/FM reception, dual stereo speakers, and easy-to-use ergonomics, making it even better than the Sangean single-speaker Sonido. As a bedside radio, it has even better FM reception than my Sangean WR-2 but it lacks the WR-2's depth and heaviness, qualities I like in a bedside radio. For a lighter, portable radio with no remote, go for the PR-D5. If you want more luxury in your radio (remote, numerical volume indicator, heavier feel) and don't mind a slight compromise in FM reception, you might want to check out the Sangean WR-2, which is compatible with an upgraded FM antenna attachment. One question many will have is why the PR-D5 goes for about 15 dollars less than the Sonido. The answer most likely is that the 2.5-inch stereo speakers on the PR-D5 don't have the richness nor the depth of the Sonido's 3-inch monoaural speaker.Update: Ironically, I don't like listening to talk radio on dual speakers. This is not a technological issue, but psychological. The voices don't seem as focused as they do on the Sangean WR-2's monoaural speaker. So if you're a heavy AM talk radio listener, you might want to opt for the WR-2.Second Update: To really test the FM on the PR-D5, I tried to pull in the weak college station 88.9. The PR-D5 pulled in the station with clarity, even better than my Eton S350. The verdict: My PR-D5 is my best performing AM/FM radio, even better than the Eton/Grundig S350. That says quite a lot. Even more astounding, the PR-D5 is 15 dollars cheaper.Third Update: I brought my PR-D5 to my work office and like all the digital radios I've tried it suffered compromised reception. I succeeded more with my Tivoli Model Three (same as the Model One with the additional clock). So for your office, if it's full of computer interference, you might want to go with an upscale analog radio like the aforementioned Tivoli Model One or Three.Fourth Update:Power supply stopped working and Sangean replaced my entire radio two or three years ago. Since that time, my speakers have gradually suffered distortion to the point that I no longer use my PR-D5. Mind you, this distortion took place with normal use. These speakers were a bit muffled to begin with, as most people agree is a problem with the PR-D5. But distortion made this unusable.I now recommend a more superior Sangean, the CL-100: Better FM, better crisp speaker sound. And it's cheaper than the PR-D5.
