My previous vacuum pump was a no-name one off Ebay, ostensibly with much higher specs than this one, and costing a bit less. However, the Robinair has no trouble matching or exceeding the other's performance, which is cool to see. It's quite refreshing to see such nice build quality compared to the usual Ebay junk - the exhaust fitting, for instance, is actually stainless steel, and not cheap flimsy plastic, and it's just a lot nicer to work with. The overall pumping noise is dramatically quieter, allowing for much better assessment of the flow rate through the pump by listening to bubble noise, and the oil it came with is also quite pure and doesn't have the suspicious fishy amine-like smell characteristic of my old pump.I'm only rating four stars instead of five because of the total lack of an oil mist trap in the exhaust fitting. I had assumed that that was the whole point of an exhaust fitting, to prevent constant oil loss from misting, but it turns out the one in this pump is just a check valve, and the exhaust never goes through any kind of filter. The manual and marketing materials explicitly claim that it has an oil mist trap and won't emit fog, but I don't know what to tell you - It's not just that I got a bad unit with a missing filter; I really just don't even see a spot for one here at all. I'm grumpy about this, since the main reason that I ditched the old pump was because its oil mist trap was falling apart and mist was escaping. I have to throw the Robinair in a fume hood whenever I want to use it to keep my workspace from getting filled with oil fog. This also means that the pump is losing oil much faster than it should, so I'll have to refill it much more frequently, and I don't love that either. There are aftermarket exhaust fittings for vacuum pumps like this one that include high-quality oil mist traps, and I guess that's what I'll have to look into. That looks like it's going to increase the total price of the pump by well over 50%, though, which is very disappointing. It's especially frustrating compared to the cheapo Ebay pump I had before it which included a flimsy but nevertheless functional oil mist trap out of the box, costing only about 80% of the Robinair's price. I'm still giving this pump 4 stars, and not less, because if you don't mind the mist, it really is a very well-made and effective pump. Definitely steer clear if you're looking for something that you're planning to operate in your basement or garage at home, though. You need a fume hood for this one.

It makes lots of oil fumes and quite noisy compared to the single stage vacuum pump, it's not recommended.

The quality of this new stuff is deplorable. This is another American company using its brand name as a consumable- something to exploit while running it into the ground. Yep. You got me. This pump trips the thermal overload at the most inopportune times. If you can't depend on it you may as well throw it away. If you need a cheap pump just buy an unapologetically Chinese brand. If you need a good pump, buy a better brand. Just don't make my mistake and buy this one.Step it up Robinair.

bought this to use when stabilizing pen blanks so it runs for extended periods. It does a great job, the only time I notice any exhaust mist is when it first pulls a vacuum, after that it no longer does. nice quiet machine.

This is much better than the cheap one I bought for $45. I should have bought this first. Much quieter. Smokes a lot less. Built to last.

I'm not trying to make a living working on big HVAC units. I just want to keep my old cars and trucks running and the air cool. This baby is exactly what the doctor ordered! It is made well, runs more quietly than I anticipated gets the job done. It may be a little slower than the big units, but it pulls a pretty deep vacuum, getting all the air and moister out of the system. I would buy this one again, but I anticipate getting 10 years service out of the one I just bought!

The product is great and well built. I was a bit disappointed it was manufactured in China as Robinair products used to be made in the USA, but this is a sign of the times. The product was well packed and the delivery was quick. I appreciate the service I get from Amazon.com, not only from the quality of merchandise, but also the information on shipping & delivery.Thank you,Guy W. Archerd
