Product Description

Park Tool SW-0 Spoke Wrench in use

Park Tool SW-0 Bicycle Spoke Wrench

Our iconic spoke wrenches have been a mainstay of our product lineup since we introduced them over 40 years ago. With their simple design and professional quality, they're still the favorite of bike mechanics around the world. Each Park Tool SW-0 is made in the USA, and is precision-stamped, hardened and nickel plated for long service. Park Tool Spoke Wrenches are vinyl-dipped in one of four colors indicating the size at a glance.

The SW-0 is sized for 3.23mm (0.127") nipples. These nipples are often found on higher-end bikes. Typical compatible nipple brands include DT Swiss, Sapim, Wheelsmith, Pillar, and many others. Always measure to be sure.

ALWAYS TRUE

There are many different sizes and even shapes of spoke nipples, and having the correct wrench is important. Luckily, Park Tool offers a full range of spoke wrenches in virtually every size found on a bike. Here's how to determine the correct wrench for your bike, and a selection of tools we make to help you stay true:

Incorrectly-fitting spoke wrench on a bicycle spoke nipple

SIZE MATTERS

Most square nipple sizes are within 1mm of each other, so a wrench that is too big may still seem like it fits. However, nipples are typically made of brass or aluminum. Both are a relatively soft material and can be easily damaged by the wrong sized spoke wrench (or poor-fitting off-brand wrenches).

Vernier calipers measuring the wrench flats of a bicycle wheel spoke nipple

MEASURE TWICE

The best method to determine the correct spoke wrench size is to use a caliper and measure the nipple across the wrench flats. Don't worry about the size of the spokes themselves - spoke gauge is not correlated to nipple size.

Park Tool SW-0 & SW-2

TOP TWO

For square nipples, there are several size possibilities, but the two most common are nominally 3.2mm (Park Tool SW-0) and 3.5mm (SW-2) when measured across the flats. Use the smallest wrench that fits on the nipple.

Had to make some adjustments to my bike spokes and tried using some of my other wrenches. They either did not fit the spoke properly or were clumsy to use. This wrench sits parallel to your spoke and fits the the spoke nipple perfectly. These make it easy to adjust spokes. Just make sure you measure and get the right size for specific spokes as the come in several sizes.Park Tools are the gold standard for bike tools in my opinion. Some tools you can save money on, but spoke wrenches are one area where I would not skimp. This is a good value for what you are getting.

These Park Tool spoke wrenches are the best I've found for adjusting spoke tension. It's quick to get on/off, and although it occasionally slips off, is far easier to work with than the other spoke wrenches. It's best to have one that fits exactly your wheel, rather than one with several sizes. And it's ergonomically bent to fit, so you get used to how to fit it quickly and rotate it an exact amount for each spoke. It's not worth it to mess with anything else, unless Park Tool improves on this design. In addition, a spoke tension gauge is essential to avoid over-tightening. At first I thought pinging the spokes would be enough. And yes, that will get you somewhat close, so it's still useful. But a spoke tension gauge is essential for dialing in the correct tension for your spoke type and maintaining consistency while loosening/tightening nearby spokes. It is awkward to use, and costs much more than this spoke wrench, but worth it. (Doesn't need to be the same brand.)What I would change:* Figure out a way to keep it from falling off the spoke as you turn it (the bend and plastic wrap help, but not enough)You get the feeling this process should be automatic. That a spoke wrench should be combined with a tension gauge and tighten it to the correct tension with a single button press. But until that is invented, this spoke tension tool is essential.

I purchased several spoke wrenches from Amazon because the 1st spoke wrench I ordered from a local online platform was unusable (it was way off the 3.35mm nipple size I needed it for ). The Park Tool SW-1 was closest to the 3.35mm nipple size.

High quality, as you would expect from Park Tool more often than not. I find this to be faster and less clumsy than universal wheel-types. It fits well either directly onto the spoke nipple or by sliding from the spoke onto the end of it, to which the curved loop lends itself. Plus, being a single size, it eliminates the need to check for or find the right size slot, which gets old quick when you're dealing with multiple spokes.Protip: Use a decent caliper and get an actual measurement of your spoke nipples (not the spoke wire, by the way) for the proper wrench size. I've got a 2020 Jamis with 3.30mm nipples on WTB disc wheels. Pretty modern, no? If I'd listened to the use suggestion - "not as common on modern bicycles" - I'd still be guessing which one to get.If you don't have calipers in your toolbox, what are you even doing with your life? They're not that much, just ...ahem... get a pair.

I wish that Park made an SW-41 4-sided version of this like they do for the Black and Red sizes. Apparently there isn't as much call for it. I've found that the 0.13 nipples are MORE prone to stripping because they are usually on the cheapest off-brand wheels and need a 4-sided wrench all the more.Apparently Park doesn't think so. No SW-41 is made so we have to make do with the SW-1 instead. I don't even own an SW-0 or SW-2, just the SW-40 and the SW42. I work on a lot of older abused bikes and it's nice knowing I don't have to worry about stripping nipples as much as long as the spoke isn't so chewed up that I can get it on. If it is that chewed up I will fall back to my SW-7 which has the same sizes as the SW-0, SW-1, and SW-2 but I bought this SW-1 because it's a pain sometimes having to look for the right size of the three on the SW-7.
