  • 1144 steel has excellent strength, hardness, and it is easily machined as well as being designed to resist warping during heat treatment.
  • 0.875" Diameter, 24" Length
  • Cold Roll A513 is typically used in automotive parts, construction, and various mechanical industries to create a wide range of tubes and piping.
  • Meets ASTM-A108, ASTM-A29

The 1144 carbon steel round rod has been cold drawn, has an unpolished (mill) surface, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A311 specifications, and has a standard tolerance. The 1144 carbon steel grade has medium carbon content for strength, hardness, and resistance to wear, and provides better machinability than 1045 carbon steel. This material can be heat treated for higher hardness. The rod has been cold drawn, a room-temperature process of pulling metal through a die to create the shape.

Steel is an iron alloy with carbon and other elements that modify the steel to achieve specific properties. In general, steels with higher carbon content have greater strength, hardness, and wear resistance, while those with lower carbon content have more formability, weldability, and toughness. Carbon steels, which include most AISI-SAE grades in the 1000 range, are classified by their level of carbon content as low (below 0.3%), medium (0.3% to 0.6%) and high (0.6% and above). Alloy steels, which include AISI-SAE grades in the 1300 and 4000 ranges and above, incorporate elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and nickel to modify properties like machinability and corrosion resistance. Tool steels, which include most grades with a letter and number grade designation, have high carbide content for wear resistance, high hardness, and the ability to hold a cutting edge. Some tool steels are designed to resist deformation when used in elevated temperatures.

Tensile strength, used to indicate a material’s overall strength, is the peak stress it can withstand before it breaks. Wear resistance indicates the ability to prevent surface damage caused by contact with other surfaces. Toughness describes the material's ability to absorb energy before breaking, while hardness (commonly measured as indentation hardness) describes its resistance to permanent surface deformation. Formability indicates how easily the material can be permanently shaped. Machinability describes how easily it can be cut, shaped, finished, or otherwise machined, while weldability characterizes the ability to be welded.

I needed a .4375 diameter. I clicked that amongst the various sizes. I noticed and thought it was an error that the title said .5, It delivered fast, but was in fact a .5. I checked the listing and if you click .5 it is actually a .5625. The smaller ones say what the selection says, but it looks like .4375 isn't an option. Well I have a lathe and files. At least this wasn't intended for something with super tight tollerances.

I ordered from Online Metals LLC, listed shipping-time was about 1-week, however it arrived in about 48 hours. Apparently shipped overnight. The packaging was excellent too. It's a steel rod, the right size, steel, magnetic, straight, sturdy. It's what's described, so not much else to day!

Perfect fit, I used it for filler on a pneumatic wheel and rim with a 5/8 axle bore to a 1/2” axle

I appears to be a round rod, Unpolished (Mill) Finish, Cold Drawn, Stressproof Temper. It felt good to get this thing away from that place. Seems like the longer they had ‘em the more stuff they do to ‘em. You’re safe now.

Works well as a round steel bar. It’d be very bad as a square piece of wood. Though it’s similar to oval plastic, I wouldn’t recommend using it as such.
