This is a quality roughing endmill, cuts cleanly and quickly through aluminum and mild steel. Makes short work of projects and allows me to move more material faster and preserve my finer tooling for finishing passes. Quality, time, and price make this a great value.

I picked up the 1/2" rougher and it's working great for what it is. But I'm finding that the TiSiN/AlCrN coating is very particular. It wears quickly if you're not super cautious with your speeds, feeds, depth of cuts, coolant, etc. Watch your parameters and get those chips out of there, because once you start galling up and lose that coating on the edge, you're practically going to have to take all your cuts 65% or less, or pitch it.Those are really the only complaints, which is just a learning curve with these coatings. Once you get past that, you're golden. Otherwise this is a great little rougher!

I ran a slot through a scrap piece of 4140 with no issues. I tried cuts up to .050 deep and the bit held up just fine with no chatter or deflection. It left a decent surface finish for a roughing cutter.

I was going to buy a roto tiller - Then I saw NZ Tools was selling these 4 flute roughing end mills for 26 bucks - I figured I'd give these a try first. I'm happy to say this NZ roughing end mill does, indeed, plow the field. I did a side mill cut of 103 thousandths of an inch and used nearly an inch (.911") of the cutting length of the end mill. I hand fed @ 650 to 700 RPM (dry) and plowed through a 304 SS (with some kind of sprinkles) boat prop shaft – in the HRC 30 neighborhood. Cut great - looks great. I inspected under 10x glass and it is hard to tell I used her; the coating & grind look like they did when I put her in the collet. This is a nice budget roughing end mill.I would be remiss if I didn't mention something I think this end mill has that, probably, about 90 to 95% of the other budget end mills being sold on Amazon don't have. That would be an HoNEsT Vendor. I am so tired of reading marketing that tells me a 6 dollar endmill is going to cut HRC 68, or HRC 55, or etc... They are not – they are lies being fed to us by unscrupulous vendors using deceptive marketing to try and get your dollar in their pocket. Please don't support those vendors; if we don't support them – they will go away. I cut into a chunk of approx. 30 HRC with this NZ Tools ½” rougher. NZ tools marketing says this cutter is good for 32 HRC and below. Guess what? It is. This 32 HRC budget rougher is probably as good and better than the majority of the budget end mill being marketed @ 55HRC plus. NZ Tools – I certainly hope you continue using this policy of honesty in the marketing of all your tools. The NZ tool Amazon Store front shows NZ Tools only sells end mills; They don't sell nose hair trimmers, party balloons, piles cream, or kitchen sinks. Just end mills. I like what I see – it merits support. The banner for this end mill says it has a TiSiN coating – I believe that to be an error. In my experienceTiSiN is a gold flavored coating. Down below in the marketing it says AlTiBN,TiAlN & AlCrN. It is all pretty stupid NzT. Please correct that. If you can't get that information right I don't think you deserve to have folks buy your end mills either. I believe the above to be an error and not deceptive marketing. So:5 Stars for The NZtools 1/2", 4 Flute – Roughing End Mill ~ Thanks for Reading – Have an Incredible Life! ~

Using the mill in mild 1008 steel, taking multiple 1/2 deep by 1/8 wide cuts 8" long, I was able to really push feed using plenty of aqueous coolant to flush the high chip volume away and with no noticeable wear on coating. This mill will be great for hogging, cleaning up welds, and other processes where durability and toughness are needed but a perfect surface finish is not required

Cuts through mild steel with ease. The cutting surfaces are nice and sharp. Well made roughing End mill. The surface finish comes out really nice but in my pictures I did a lot of starting, stopping, and forgot to lock the z axis so there's a slight step. Overall very happy with this end mill.
